Hi all. Thanks in advance for your help. I bought 2 go karts recently that need work. The first one is a yerf dog. No engine, clutch ect. I'm going to grab a harbor freight engine, I've had good success with them so far. But I need clutch/torque converter/jack shaft advice. Building this and another cart for grandson's so I need to do it cheaply as I have 2 to fix. The driven gear on the axle has 57 teeth. Can I use what I have pictured? What else will I need?
Next cart is a manco. Again using a h/f engine. The driven gear on that shaft only has 27 teeth. On that one it's a different set up than the yerf dog, it doesn't have a belt I believe, it's a straight chain drive off a clutch? I've included another picture, can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track and what else I may need ? Thanks again for your help, I love this forum

I think qtband meant overall pics of the karts; the size and shape of them.

The smaller racer style karts with smaller wheels can get by on simple centrifugal clutches, but the bigger, heavier, more obese karts, nay “buggies” with the bloat of added roll cages, dual seats, full or semi suspensions and added tubing/bracing, and all that nonsense practically NEED a torque converter transmission just to move...

A lot of that depends on the size and number of riders though...
But I digress.

Riders on both will primarily young children. Shouldn't be over 150# with 2 riders

Thanks qtband for the eBay link. Use that set up with the yerf dog with the 57 tooth driven gear or the manco with the 27 tooth driven gear? What should I use for the the other set up?

Use that for the 57 tooth on the yerf dog.

On the Manco, it probably originally used a jackshaft and/or a reverse box with an additional set of sprockets in-between. To make that one usable with anything besides the original type of setup, you'll need to swap the axle sprocket for something in the 60-72 tooth range (depends on tire size)

looks like the orange one had a wet clutch or similar 2to1 setup on it judging by that fifth bolt hole thats too clean to not have been used.

a combination sprocket and band brake could get around this but you will have to flip the band brake to the other side of the sprocket and saw off the extra mount length

I found the owners manual for the manco online and it has illistrations . It has a dual chain drive set up. At least it gives me tooth count on all the sprockets. It's a manco model 435/436

ok so it had a jack shaft plate that went under the motor. Typical of a lot of karts.

you can order some engine mounts that contain jack shafts or build your own.

you can run 11t engine to 27t inside jackshaft then 11t jack shaft outside to the axle 27t and get a good 6 to 1 ratio

I found the set up I need , dual sprocket on the jackshaft. What I also would like to know is the axle gear will stay stock and stock set up took a 41 chain, the new cluster sprocket is 35 chain. Are they ok to mix? The clutch and cluster sprocket would be 35 chain and the axle gear 41. Thanks for the help!!

What ever you do it's the tooth count that is the main thing....
However... The chain types are not interchangeable themselves... 35 with 35... 41 with 41 chain...

Also, remember the diameters will be much different with same tooth counts- a 71t-#35 sprocket is much smaller then a #41 72t sprocket...

ok so the original sprocket/hub won't work with #35 chain. The combo sprocket I need only comes in #35 chain. I can get a clutch in #35 chain. so the replacements im finding for the axle sprocket/hub only come in 36 tooth version. The oe one is 27 tooth. That's a big difference? Im not looking for a lot of speed, this cart is for my grandsons and they'll be riding it on trails in woods behind my house. So for the clutch I can do either 10 or 12 tooth, the combo gear I found is

gopowersports.com

/ Sprockets
/ Manco Sprocket upgrade, 36T- 16T, 13063- comes with #35 chain

so how well will this combo work?

Can you show a zoomed out pic of the rear are for where your planning to mount this jackshaft...
I don't think your going to get a reasonable ratio by getting a dual sprocket combo to correct the final ratio...
I'm thinking your going to need to get a piece of keyed shaft, a few pillowblocks, then a few separate sprockets of the right count to get the proper ratio...
With that being said... Might just have enough space.... Or not...

Here is a factory breakdown of your setup. Hopefully you can find what you need based on this guide. I've always found using what the kart shipped with originally works out the best as long as parts are available.

Thanks

Appears to take two 420 chains according to the illustration.

Mckutzy, I was wondering if that's the way I was going to have to go. This cart got a little hacked up so I'm building a basket case lol. Trying to get a dependable cart on the cheap for grandsons. I'm a truck mechanic so I'm capable, just need some guidance. Thanks for the help, here's a couple more pictures...well so I thought. The pictures won't upload, I'll try again later

So then I could have a clutch with 10 teeth, to a 24t gear on the jack shaft, then from the jackshaft a 10t gear going to the 24t gear/hub on the axle shaft? Or what would you recommend?

Karttekk, the factory set up isn't available, so I'm struggling to come up with a good set up
