Depends on the phone. I recently posted some pics that where taken in portrait mode.

Did you make sure the button was on the right? And give your phone time to adjust (flip the screen)? I dunno? I seem to have the most success when I hold the phone like that to take the picture.

I have an iPhone.

I took this with the phone in portrait mode. I have no hardware button, just software. It was near the bottom. Samsung Galaxy S8.

I did have issues with other phones.
