I've never seen anyone talk about this.
We're always talking RPM and using those mini tachs.

I just found a Tach app for smartphones. It uses your engines sounds to determine the speed after you set the parameters for the particular engine.
I have to wait until morning to try it out.
If it works, or at least gets close, I'm guessing it's worth the $8.99 price.

The iphone app is called Engine RPM by Real-time Specialties.
There's apps out there for droid too.

I shall report back later today.:thumbsup:

Thanks Sid.

When I wrote previously, I hardly had any idea what a smart phone was, so I bypassed your link.

One of the perks/downfalls of being a resident here is that we don't HAVE to read every thread, and sometimes miss a few. :D

Wait, I thought we were contractually obligated to read every word of every post. Bob, I want 47 hours of my life back, please.

Some of the tachs I look at have a button to switch between RPM and how many hours it's been running for. That would be useful on keeping up with oil changes, unless one only uses it for a few hours out of the year and just does a 1 a year or 1 every 6 month changes. Besides, having to have the screen brightness all the way up to see the tach is a great way to burn your battery down, even only after an hour or two.

Especially if that first thread was three years old already when you joined ;)

I wasn't complaining;
but you asked who would have thought about such thing;
and I answered that...:D

OK, 47 hrs at the GAB Institute of Motorkarting.
Tuition = 47 Hrs @ $50/Hr = $2,350

Since you used the DIYGK Coupon Code, you get 6.5% off.

I'll send an invoice for $2,197.25
Paypal payments require a 3% processing fee.

I don't think it's meant to be used continuously as a replacement for a real tach.:roflol:

They do not like to update nicely that's for sure. Glow gauges or whatever has a analog tach, Grant will probably be dropping one onto Midas. Supposedly you can set it up for single cylinder engines or do it in a way where it can work accurately enough. For $80 and has multiple LED options for color, might be nice.

May I drop in a bit of self promo?

the kartcalc app has an inbuilt speedometer..
if it knows your gear ratio and wheel size it'll try to derive the rpms from that...

sure it's not as convenient as sound analysis
(I cannot tap into your microphone from a website of course),
but if you enter the correct effective wheel diameter
(twice the distance from the center of the rear axle to the ground when passenger is seated)
and your GPS is having good signal strength (accuracy of 5m or less)
it's just as close as sound analysis.. and it's free ;)

Okay, 'nough of shameless self promotion ;)

Is he alive? I reckon Texans don't take too kindly to California folk coming over trying to get their hands on some of their guns.
