Hi, I just bought a go kart for my son, and looking to have some fun. I got a Coleman KT196 for $400 slight used.
I'm no stranger to racing or engine building as I have a race car I built with my dad. So this will be my son and I first project.

Any help and tips for it will be greatly appreciated .

My son just wants to beat his cousins on a straight away, lol. They have a 90cc Yamaha 4 wheeler and Dirt bike, he hasn't tried it yet. We all head to an off road course every 2 weeks. My son had tried out a friends go kart, and wanted one himself. So here we are. So what kind of mods can we do for now, without opening up the engine yet.

Ooh that'll be tough. Dirt bike may have a manual gearbox or cvt/torque converter and the engine can rev higher. The atv same thing.

Well it's not too long of a straight away. Plus they won't be going too fast. Just need to do something for quick acceleration. What are the usual mods? I believe this kart already has a cvt/torque converter, from pictures I've seen, and it's a Honda clone motor from what I'm told.

Acceleration needs deep low gearing. Good starting point is 10 tooth on the clutch/torque converter and 60 or higher on the axle. What you gain in acceraltion, you lose in top speed.

Bigger go kart motors have lost to 50cc dirt bikes. Its the multiple gears, and higher revving engine, not so much the power.

To stand a chance, governor removal, intake, exhaust, and jet to .036-.038. I'd hold off on that though until you are comfortable with your son driving at 45-50 mph on that thing, because that is how fast he would go with those modifications (and the proper gearing).

for a better launch, you can look into changing up the springs or weights ont he drive unit of the torque converter for an engagement rpm of 2500-2600. That wont add to the top end though, just more torque to the wheels at start. It also makes for a poor riding experience below those rpms.

Just curious if you have done anything to this kart? I just bought my son one for Christmas and I am wanting it to be decked out before he gets it.

The riding experience is fine below those RPM, just so long as you are coasting down hill.:rolleyes:
