mitsubishi GT 600 torque converter replacementquestion

First of all thanks for welcomingme to the forum, I am a 25 yr Army retiree that enjoyed jumping out of planes for a living.


I have a Tomberline firefox go kart that was given to me today, it runs great but the torque converter/clutch needs to be replaced.

Does anyone here know where I can get a good replacement?

Also the brakes are not working, any good ideas for a replacement?

It has no markings but it looks just like a 620.

It will go, you just have to lift the rear wheels up to crank it and once started you have to give it a shove to get it going unless you are facing downhill.

My guess is it has to be a problem in the clutch.

Son loved it and it was free, i figured it is defiantly worth putting a few bucks in.

my neihbors kids have a Razor ATV so it never got ridden much.

Sitting for two years and cranked on the second pull.

Measure, investigate and see if one of those $60 Torq-A-Verter knockoffs sold on that famous auction site will fit.

Otherwise I have no idea what you really have. Also, it's Tomberlin, no E.

You sure? I mean there are not many parts on a torque converter that could fail ..
basically a bit of cleaning and maintenance
(and yes replacing belt, maybe weights springs or buttons when worn down)
but basically that's still maintenance not replacement

So, let's see a picture and we might be able to find the best, cheapest and easiest(quickest) solution for you.
And if you're lucky it's just one not three

But for that we need a picture to see what needs cleaning and what needs replacement.

as far as I know the genIV of the 620 had a series30 Torque converter..

if your's identical, then you certainly won't need replacement, a good clean and some small parts will bring it back to live almost certainly.
(weights and garter springs 20 bucks roughly, belt 25.. and that covers 90% of all repairs)

Thing is when the engine is running the cart is moving.

I have to start it with the wheels off the ground as the clutch is not disengaging while the engine is ideling, then push it off the brick and hop in while it takes off.

I will tear it apart and post some pics

How 'bout taking some pics before you tear it apart? That will give us a better idea of what's failing...

sounds like either your engine's set to idle way too high
or the throttle cable got stuck and is pulling the butterfly open rather than a TC issue to be honest.

frankly.. check the throttle cable first (if you do not have any slack in the throttle cable on your carb, it's likely stuck somehow somewhere)
see if the butterfly closes all the way, if not adjust.

then lower the idle speed until it nearly dies and then back up so it just stays idling evenly.

and if your kart STILL moves then, we might want to think of a TC issue..

for now, that's unlikely

I will check in a bit, the gas pedal works, if its on a hill it strains to take off. I will check the throttle.

I am pulling the clutch off tommorow and taking it to a local kart shop.

He thinks the clutch my just be stuck like everyone has said, the kart sat for several years, but it still cranks on the first pull.

Found out the problem, i pulled the clutch and it was toast.

Dropped it off with a buddy who works on karts, parts should be around $200 so not bad at all.

Clutch only had one pad left on it.

I smell rip off..
what's that an alpha sports price tag?
they charge 130 for the plastic cover and 440 for a series 30 TC with backplate
(no cover no belt)

200 bucks buys you an original comet series 30 with driver, driven and belt
on mfgsupply.com
(no backplate of course)
which is way too many new parts for what you "need" I bet
max 80 in parts and 35 in elbow grease is more likely to fix a series 30 if you have such

ah well.. nevermind
