I think im lean, but why? Opinions wanted.

So Ive lurked for years, soaking up info, and usually I can find a post that gets me going in the right direction. Currently Im stumped.

My race kart has a 196cc BSP clone, and the last time I rode it, before this issue, the driver bearing on my cheetah clutch seized up. I parked it, got busy, and a year later pulled it out to work on it. I fixed the clutch, cleaned the carb, and gas tank. It starts and idles fine but wont run with the choke off. Assuming its bad gas I clean the carb again, more thoroughly... twice. Now I can run it with the choke about 3/4 on. All intake gaskets are now new, and i pull the head to find the intake pushrod has a broken tip. BINGO! I order new, standard length, chrome moly pushrods (2), as Ive been wanting to upgrade the valve train in preparation for a cam/rod upgrade anyway, and set the lash. Once its running correctly again ill do the rest. The lifters looked fine from the head side, but could still be a problem i feel.

Current status is... its starts and idles fine with the choke off, but if I hit the throttle with the choke off, it bogs and shuts off. Back at 3/4 choke, it pulls hard and performs pretty well. The motor runs all the way up to 6350 rpm. My first thought is jets, but before the clutch issue I was running fine. My gut tells me to go into the block and check the cam up to the rockers, which is most likely my next move. Just thought Id seek some advice and opinions of what to look for first. What did you use to poke all the holes?
If you didn't poke all the holes, it is probably still dirty.

Leaky intake / carb gaskets???

I assume you mean the e-tube and jets? The only thing I have that small is wire strands from various wire i have around. Doesnt offer much rigidity though. I saw small tiny files for that on a Honda carb cleaning video recently... I should get a set.

A set of tip cleaners for oxy/acetylene torches works really well, and they're like 3 bucks.

I would say Bob is right about the jets, but I think its probably the low side jet or passage stopped up .

I've used the wire from a bread tie stripped of all the paper.
Let me see if I can find a good carb cleaning video.
People on here used to swear by boiling the metal parts in lemon juice. ?????

It's a good video. Just make sure the O-ring on the pilot jet is in place when you put it back together. The video skips that.

If it won't idle it's probably the idle jet.

Remove black plastic idle speed screw and you will see a black plastic pice right under where the black plastic screw was located. Use a pair of needle nose pliers and pull it out. The part that gets clogged is not that big hole in the side, but the miniature jet hole at the end that connects to the big hole in the side.

A #61-80 micro drill bit set on eBay for like $6-$20 is good for cleaning out small passages with the non-sharp end.

That is a good video, I've already watched it. I'll pick something up today to better poke the tiny holes. While I'm at it I'll inspect the spacer again.

The idle is fine but I'll pull all the jets again.

UPDATE: bob58o, you were right on the money. Shes purrin' like a kitten, at idle and WOT, choke off.

Thank you very much to all of you that put in your 2 cents, especially to anickode for the tip on the oxy torch tip cleaner. It is absolutely perfect for cleaning the holes on the e tube and jets, and for $4, you cant beat it.

You know, I had my own ideas of where I thought my issue was. After reading thread, after thread, after thread, about all kinds of things, not just relating to my problem, I had a lot of confidence in the DIYGK community. So I decided to swallow my pride and follow your suggestions. Glad I did, thanks again to all who took the time to reply. Im off to burn some gas!

That's awesome to hear...

A side note on those torch tip cleaners...
They have rasp edges acting like a file, to remove debris from the orifice that builds up.
Use in a jet very sparingly, or only the untextured portion to poke at holes, especially the idle where as it is already a tiny hole, and might get opened up or elongated.

Glad it was an easy fix. Dirty Carb issues are common and a simple to fix. So it is easy to suggest that first. Any time I hear people saying they need to fiddle with the choke, it points towards a dirty carb, or maybe an intake leak. Especially after a year of sitting dormant.
