I got a old briggs flathead motor Model 135202 type 0015 01 what I'm wanting to know if you can replace the old carb with one off a predator. Or another briggs motor. Or adapter for a carb. The reason I'm asking this type is the carb and tank set up and the tank is pretty bad as is the carb. Thanks

If you can get it to attach, you can replace it with just about anything.

An adapter plate and a 22mm mikuni slider for instance.

The problem with putting any aftermarket carburetor on an engine is getting the governor to work properly. If you want the governor to work, that is.

I second what the man upstream of me says.

The tanks can go bad like you mention, but from internal rot/rust (stay away from ethanol!) or the mating surfaces between the tank and carb can get warped from physical damage and what-not, introducing a vacuum leak around the seals and probably a half dozen other ailments.

Interesting to note that the racing guys in certain classes utilized the tank mounted carbs; the Pulsa-Jet adjustable jet variety along with an air filter adapter/velocity stack to optimize flow, so it's not like the Briggs carbs are too utilitarian for racing and performance considerations...

If you can make a manifold, the possibilities are endless ,
Tillotson
Tecumseh carbs
Predator carbs
Factory briggs bowl style
Even tho mikunis do not belong on a briggs I will mention them

Part # 691922, or # 281247 will let you bolt tecumseh carbs on your briggs, but a bit pricey.

Deleting the governor from the motor is a must, Like crack open the case and take out the plastic gear! This is the first thing I do with every motor.

I am sort of a stickler for keeping the governor intact and operational on stock Briggs motors, (tweaked slightly, perhaps, but not revving 5k) mainly because of that wonderful journal bearing they use.

I for one would like to see how a clone carb could be fitted to a Briggs, and having the stock gov working....

I could see a bel crank and and a few rods similar to the clone motor.

Oh it really couldn't. I was more referring to using a Honda carb or the like... Standard butterfly type. Even those would be tricky.

Could you explain this a bit?

I only heard of the dipper breaking at around 5k. With stock springs I have never had a rod fail in a 5hp.
You can find a raptor rod for under $20 on ebay if your worried.

Easier then fabricobbling a gov setup.

They do have a bushing in some models.
My big #14 has a bushing bearing...

I was pretty certain... I always used to gauge how "good" a Briggs was by the compression and the shaft play. It's been a good while since I dealt with one.
