Need help with electric off road go kart!

Hi, i want to build an electric off road buggy for a summer project. I AM IN THE UK!!!! so please, if you are here to help, bare that in mind!!

I have been going round and round in circles with motors. I have been looking at a 1600w 48v electric scooter motor for quite some time now, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331961903637?var=541012792067
but i need to be able to climb hills and it doesn't look like this motor will have enough power. I am on a budget, UNDER £600! for the entire build! there is not a lot of choice for what i'm looking for unfortunately. Either really expensive motors or really cheap crap ones. I saw an article on this website saying that I should use a 36v golf buggy/cart motor and overvolt it to 48v with another 12v battery. And using a 48v golf buggy/cart speed controller. However there is barely anything to find under that title. If someone could tell me if the electric scooter motor is still a good option please let me know not but i fear it isn't.

that motor is crap.. it takes a constant 38Amp at 48V thus it's 1600W electrical...
(not bad, not bad) but claiming it's a 1600W motor is a bit of a stretch ..

especially if compared to the 1000W my1020 which is 1kW mechanical
(well in fact delivers 1200W plus mechanical!) drawing a constant 33.5 AMps or so
(just half an amp less than the so called 1600W motor)
or to make a fair comparision...

1632W (electrical) for the 1600W motor*cough* and
1608W (electrical) for the My1020 it is compared to

not much of a difference is it?

Not cheap though, thus... maybe IDK... your choice.

Functional Artist on this Forum just last year used a clone of that motor in his ElDingo build,
so you might want to check that out to see what it'd be using one of those

PS no.. really... stay away from RC stuff, as far as you can;
I will NOT rant again, but I won't either trying find that one RC motor that's actually worth looking at when thinking about go karts.

Okay IF... I removed the gearing system at the front, just unbolt the 4 bolts... Would this motor be okay? because i know geared motors are bad for go karts...

P.S the motor is 25.8cm in length so much bigger than the electric scooter motor from earlier.

That motor is better with it's planetary gear system.

but what do you actually want now?
I'm a bit confused, the motors are very random you're asking about.

Also... Do yourself a favour and read this
thread about how to determine motor power

350W are not going to help you much I'd say...
(I doubt our beloved my1020 1000W will do to be honest)

So once you have a power figure in mind, let us know.

I have spent sooo long searching the uk internet for suitable motors and i do know roughly what i'm looking for, however as i said before either REALLY EXPENSIVE MOTORS or cheap crappy ones and nothing really in between, i was just trying to rule out alternative options, Sorry if this wasted your time.

It looks rather expensive though, tbh I think that's closer to a four figure pricetag judging by it's specs..

Have you checked that thread and did some math yet?
Frankly, 10kW is a LOT of power and not only will the controller to power that thing set you back ~200-250 bucks alone, but the batteries will not last for very long either when you indeed floor this thing.
And the cables need to have this kind of current flowing without burning through their insulation in no time are going to be expensive as well.

Half that (4-5kW) is plenty

actually I'd estimate closer to something like 2500 for small'ish offroad kart.
But you will have to do the math on your own, do the weight-guesswork, decide what wheels and what terrain .. max incliniation to climb etc.

That's all things I just cannot do on your behalf.

350 is very little, it'll surely move you and a small road kart, but not at mind boggling speeds to say the least,
it'll work, it'll be cheap (much cheaper than the motor you linked btw).

but climbing a log (or say larger stick) will be impossible as will be going "uphill" or plowing through mud n' dirt.

10kW is just the opposite.. it'll plow through mud and dirt like a blast (but make sure to protect the motor from said mud and dirt)
it's going to be expensive and it's going to require quite an amount of batteries to carry around if you actually need this kind of power for more than a few seconds.

The motenergy are about the cheapest motors you can find (since they make incredibly large quantities of them) it's sold and used all over the world and thus you should have it easy enough track one down locally.
(they come in several sizes [not dimension but power here ]
Pick the one that's closest to your guestimated value.
Or if said value is below 1kW go cheap.. my1020 1kW 36 or 48V.


And forgive me for being impatient,
but I still cannot make out any pattern in the motors you asked about.
it's like you're just searching for your location instead of motor specification.

Sourcing locally is great, sure thing;
but sometimes it's cheaper to wait a week waiting for a part to arrive from China directly (alibaba) even with all the fees and such.
watch your money, a project like this is expensive enough, no need to waste it
Especially when the "local alternative" is not up to the task at hand
