The town sucks.
Everyone in the town sucks.
No one wants to work or do their freakin' job.

3 machine shops, and no one could do it.

"Oh, I don't have a mandrel that size."

No? Well, I got an idea!

Let's call a machine shop!!!!

Oh,.... well,....... I suppose I could make one.
But I'm going to have to charge you for it.

A crankshaft with the right taper could be used as the mandrel... I think there is also a center mark for centering.

Another fairly expensive option is to sent it over to the guy at NRRacing.com and he can balance your crank/piston/rod. Will cost about $100 plus shipping costs AHHHHH!

After spending that money you will forget about the Flywheel!

I guess since I'm gonna clean up the older engine I started with, I think the closest I will get is if I pull the cam when I pull the head and see what it does freewheeling.
Even one of those old time bubble tire balancers might work if a person could find one.

To take the time regular jobs to build custom tooling for 1 job for some random schmuck isnt gona fly most places. Its not time, or cost effective for the shop.

You are better ahead, and more $$ left in you pocket to ship it out to someone who already has the tooling and setups to do the work.


Ofcourse, you could always try walking in with a massive wad of $100s and start thumbin through it and tell them what you want done?

Basically making that mandrel would tie up a machine that could be doing much better paying work, and like any kind of shop work it's all about the bottom line. I really don't blame them for wanting to charge to make a mandrel, it's work, and work should pay.

Then they better give me the mandrel, and when the next schmuck like me comes along, I'll rent it back to them.

But, all in all, tools are tools, and if you have to make one to do a job, guess what?
Now you have that tool on hand if another job should require it.

I miss the "can do" attitude in small business.

When I ran my R, which was strictly BBQ, every now and then someone would come in wanting breakfast.
You know what I'd do?

I'd go into my personal supply of eggs and make them a omelette if that's what they wanted.

Why? Because I had the skill, the know how, and the materials.
Sure it was a bit of a pain.

But you know what else? People came back again and again, and never forgot about me.

And that's how you operate a small business.

I called the guy down there to alert him, but, instead, I told him I had 25 full sized ostriches being delivered, and I'd need him to watch them for 5 or 6 hours.

I work in a somewhat specialized service industry (as in only person in a 100+ mile radius) and I have found that you have to draw the line somewhere. It isn't a big deal to make an omelette when you are in a fully equipped commercial kitchen...but what if you weren't and that omelette required you going and purchasing a piece of equipment to make it? I have to turun away work sometimes because I have learned the hard way that sometimes it just isn't worth the hassle for the money. I have $30k+ in equipment to do my job and if I can't do it with the equipment I have, I don't do it. It isn't worth risking ruining the customers product of totally losing my butt on a job when I have plenty of work to do that I know I am equipped for. In fact just Saturday I turned away a job bbecause I was fairly certain I could not complete it with doing some damage to the guys stuff. It is just how it goes...how ****ed would you be if some shop told you they would give it a shot, and then called you back to let you know the flywheel was ruined because their equipment turned out to not be proper for the job?
