Let's explore just a bit....what used to be, and what is. I just ordered an LED lantern online.

Let's break that down. Just a few years back, a camping lantern (Coleman) ran on unleaded gas, and you had to pump the bejabbers outta that sucker.

Before that, the old kerosene lamp, with a wick.

And we used to have to walk to school barefoot in the snow, two miles, uphill, both ways!!! ( Not really, but a lot of things are easier nowadays.)

If you wanted information, not only was it hard to locate, but you usually had to pay for it (one way or another) either directly, or in fuel to get to the library.

I can't even tell you how much money I spent to get educated by mail. (Please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery!)

That's right folks, that was standard, now, you can get crap from China faster.

And just learning taxidermy, I got a buttload of useless crap before I found the right source.

Now, you just punch a keyboard and get it for free. (Yeah yeah I know, you gotta pay for the cervix, but WTHey, you need it anyway to text your nerd friends while you're holding up traffic or causing accidents.)

Remember when google used to be called "the card catalog"

There's this point in auto wrenching right about the turn of the century (I mean 2000,not 1900 for some of you old farts) that cars got complicated.

We get new cars in and dad's old scanners can't read the new stuff and you open the hood to see plastic shielding.
I whip out my magic pocket box and type just a few descriptive words and usually find the problem.
Dad gets mad cause he spent a fortune on a library of big books that are worthless now. Who needs a service manual for an 82 Datsun pickup?
Any body ever see a Datsun on the road?

When an appliance broke like a washing machine they actually came with a full owners manual with parts diagrams, no really.
Then you would either call to order part, send a check to get weeks later or pay c.o.d. Or go to the local parts center, yes really a parts store for appliances.
Believe it or not there were these strange places called vaccum repair stores.

Want to buy certain things, open the 5 pound sears catalog fill out order form, send check, wait ten days for check to clear, 3 more weeks for delivery.

Back when mechanics didn't get offended if you called them mechanics rather than technicians.

BTW, I've worked with a lot of guys that got insulted if they were called mechanics, which worked out, because from what I saw most of them weren't mechanics anyway.

They are neither, a computer tells them whats wrong then all it takes is "remove and replace"
A mechanic rebuilt your alternator, your transmission, your carb, brazed your radiator, cut rotors, milled heads and lapped valves.
ETC ETC ETC

The most complicated I can do is throttle body injection. This newer fuel injection stuff is so heavily based on sensors and other useless electronic crap, you look at it funny and it won't work. Back when you could retune the engine with a screwdriver for more power and no one would be the wiser. Now if you as so much as drop a tuner in your rig, you've voided the warranty, even if it is to monitor the engine and other stuff. Guy I work with put a Scangauge-II on his new truck as a code reader, incase a check engine light came on, took it to the dealer for work and said he voided the warranty with it in. You'd think that some of these guys would be up to date with the latest gear to monitor your vehicle and what not, that is not a tuner by any means. Just so stupid.

But they are all just as bad. Some techies are okay with it. I mean some dealers will install lift kits in trucks just to have a brand new "dealer exclusive". Not sure if those will honor the warranty, but they should since they modified them.

True story: When I was in elementary school, and living in a much colder climate, I was walking home (which is what we did) and it was snowing so hard I literally walked into someone's house. I was having to count my steps and feel for sign posts to figure out where I was.
