Predator Performance question

No it's simply moving the governor arm spring.
Sometimes its necessary to back off the little screw with a captured spring in the throttle assembly as well. I've always been able to get the 5k rpm without actually moving the arm on the rod.

I will at the very least do a stock to modified video with rpm comparison. With enough interest I'll go buy a new predator and some oil and torture test as well

Ok so after all this I finally just watched the video.
Well here is some more proof for Outcry.
I did not know what I was doing exactly...
But on my Kids 79cc Karts I moved the spring from the 1st hole to the 3rd hole. (79s have just 3 holes). The Throttle hookup on those are a pain, so I tried alot of stuff with linkages.
And they have been running that way since day one. These are Kids they do not know throttle control or feel or sound of an engine so they run the crap out of them.
The engines have not blown.
The governor functions. I have driven these karts you can feel and hear the gov working.
and everything is fine.

Oh and Kartorbust... watch the video, you move 2 springs.

Chancer I really need to make a new video. I'm not sure the smaller spring does anything I just remember moving it before so on those 2 I moved it as well.
The way mine is setup on the video is just the way I was showed back when and how I've done them since.

But I think at the minimum I should do a video from completely stock at stock rated rpm and then move things 1 at a time and get the 5k rpm showing which connections I move to where.

Just for my own self satisfaction when you moved it from 1st hole to 3rd how much of a rpm increase did you notice?
Obviously these are two separate engines (79cc vs 212cc) but are designed almost identically.

When you say smaller spring you are talking about the one on the Hand throttle where the throttle rod goes. I did not move that one just the other. where the 212 has 5 or 6 holes, the 79cc comes stock in the first hole, I moved to the 3rd hole and really opened up the performance. I kinda figured I was molesting the Gov, and just decided to go for it, cause I wanted the darn karts to work better.

And like I said I just want to be open minded and learn. Not take sides.

Yeah that's what I meant by smaller spring. I haven't actually looked at the setup with any real focus in quite a while.
Hopefully making a new video will help me refresh some of my knowledge.
The torture test will hopefully help prove this is a safe setup.

Still waiting on Poboy and some others to help me determine how long is long enough to run the predator for a fair assessment on the governor mod.

Just watched the video and see it's pretty easy. I may have to try it myself. Northern tool sells tach/hour meters for I think $40. Tractor Supply may have them too, I don't know.

Kartorbust that's exactly where I was gonna go, northern tool. Got one right up the road. May take a trip out there tomorrow morning and scoop one up.
The hour meter combo might come in handy for the torture test.

I'm not too picky on duration for the normal test but I'd love to see a longevity torture test of it running the duration of a 200 lap race, cool down to ambient temperature, then another 200 duration a few times.

bob58o I'm just to impatient for that mess. I'd rather get a quality one anyways cause they come in handy for tuning chainsaws as well.

I could probably replicate that pretty easily kartorbust.
Take typical lap times and multiply that by 200. Add a few minutes as a buffer. Refuel, cool, and repeat for ?? Maybe a whole day and evening doing this?
Not sure I want to do it on the engine I just put together for the kart with the nr racing parts because I just got a chain on and everything set up perfect.
I'll have to see if I have a coupon for a predator right now.

A 200 lap race takes what 45 minutes I'm guessing?

Depends heavily on the track and conditions honestly. some tracks are 1/4 mile oval and others smaller (1/8 mile etc). As clay ovals get warmer they tend to get better and the lap times get a little quicker.
I could just let it run until it runs out of gas and then refill and repeat haha. I mean it is a torture test right. I'll beat the dickens out of it at 4800 rpm and see if it makes it. If it survives an entire day of that I'd say that it made the cut.
I'm honestly expecting something in the valve train to give out before the governor gear. 4800 rpm sustained for that long.......
I don't think the valve springs etc can handle it.
We will see

While your Torture testing, I would like to see where valve Float happens in a stock Predator.
5200? 5500? +++?
Cause for most of us the Governor is removed entirely and Valve float is the new RPM Govna.

Chancer I got ya covered there to. I just removed the governor from my other engine for that tutorial. Just need to throw oil in it and I'll let it rip with the tach installed.

It will definitely be burning in the background this weekend during some videos. It's going to be in the 30's and snowing here in NC over the weekend.

Well I'm gonna definitely go grab a tach and some good old amsoil tomorrow for this weekend. If I can get a hemi predator while I'm out I will do that as well.

Should have the initial stock vs modified governor rpm video and the ungoverned valve float video posted Saturday night. Torture test might be a sunday activity.

Well I'm a little late in this but here's my 2 pennies.

That's was my b&s that grenaded.

I had a different carb and the governor linkages had already been removed. The only thing was the shaft out the case. I tied it off so it wouldn't rotate. I don't know if the internals were damaged or not before I flogged it but it did give way and ruined my day.

My other engine came to me stock. I installed my carb but left all the governor linkages and springs attached. The insides think their working.

I have since hopped it up with head work and open exhaust. Recently got a tach and I run it at 4000 to 4500 constantly. It will hit 6k on the stand.

Still holding in there.

I'm waiting to open it up for a cam and Conrod.

I'm thinking the free spin on the plactic or the weights allowing to slam out from a disabled unit causes distruction.

Keeping tention on the mech might help keep it together.
