OK everyone I'm going to post a little short tutorial on how to convert a Murray cart that had a bad CC system on it over to a Comet style clutch drive system and and show what problems I ran into to convert it over.
This is the kart that I am going to convert.

The lift that I have it on was originally built to lift a riding mower to a height that I could work on it as my knees no longer bend like they did 20 years ago as I am in my 70s but still love working on motors, karts and such.

Yes bimmer I built it...... I built it at my work, the steel is mostly scrap angle that I pulled from our scrap bin, the floor jack I bought at Harbor Freight , took me close to a year working on it at break or at lunch. Built it to lift a riding lawn mower as I can't get down on my knees any more and back is not what it was 20 years ago.

Very nice, I may steal your design for myself. I appreciate being able to use my existing floor jack instead of buying a whole single purpose contraption.

Definitely. I'm surprised such a device isn't already on the market...:idea2:

So, you have a Comet Torq-A-Verter already in your possession, Shelby1, or are you still shopping?

Hellion ,yes I have already mounted the Torq-A-Verter on the kart, my Grandson rode the kart most of the day .....until the belt fried and broke, I think that I did not have the two flat pulleys lined up correctly. And thanks every one on compliments on my lift , I changed my design during building it 3 different times till I got it to work like I wanted it to and the floor jack would pick it up correctly. I love the way it works.

Does the lift have a Locking mechanism, So you can remove the jack.
I would bust my Shins on the jack handle.

no chancer ,I did not build in a locking mechanism but what I did was to take two lengths of 2x 4 tubing and cut them so they would set in the track where the bottom rollers run to lock it in place so it could not come down . The lift is at my work I will do my best to get some pics of it in the up position with the locks in place and do my best to get some measurements and post them. I built it "as you go "so to speak and really did not do much measuring. It's surprising that there has been much interest about the lift.

We like simple useful stuff!
Yours looks simple enough to duplicate and a Comparable Model is 350 Bucks even at Harbor Freight.
Anyway there are alot of old Guys here with bad knees!:lolgoku:

Chancer here are some pics of the way I would " lock" the lift so it could not come down , I only have one in this photo you should use two as it has a tendency twist the top of the lift.

The dimensions are 3' wide , 66.5 long and the lift arms are 59" long. The top of the lift is Mirror image of the bottom except the angle stock are reversed . The roller wheels I made from 3" round stock by chucking on a lathe and boring a 5/16 hole and then cutting the bar into 3/4 inch slices , rounding the bolt heads and cutting recess's with a Dremel tool. I would recommend that you build it around your floor jack so the two of them would fit and work together .

This is the problem that caused this kart to sit for a couple of years, it was ran till the clutch and the drive on the jack shaft was worn completely away or the teeth were worn
Into "hooks", the two karts were given to my son and grandson .

The jack shaft was a design made by Murray , it is made in such away that the sprockets are not replaceable and there are no replacement parts available as Murray went out of business around 2004-5. So the best way to fix ( for me anyway)
Was to install a Comet style torque converter.

Ok I did not plan on this post getting split up and taking a long time to get it done, but life got in the way ( wife over ruled me on priories) and I bruised my right hand bad enough that I could not use my fingers or my hand. All of that is behind me and I will get this done.
These first pics are of getting the old clutch and jack shaft removed.

The next set of pics are where I mounted the torque cultch to see what was going to interfere with the mounting of the cultch .

As you can see it was hitting the motor mount and the brake band.

So to get a idea of how much to raise the motor I put a couple of Pieces of plywood under the motor

I built motor mount out of 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 1/8 angle stock and a 6x8 flat stock layed out where the mounting holes had to be both top ( for the motor ) and the bottom where the motor was. I layed out the hole pattern , drilled holes in line and opened them up into slots with a Dremel tool.

Do you have any interference with the oil filler handle?

Yes ..... the one on the back side of the motor is completely blocked , the one on the front is clear..... 212 Predator has them front and rear.
