so, have you heard the following saying?:

"I have learned the 2 secrets to being successful-

1. Don't tell anyone all that you know.
2."

I enjoy sharing my knowledge with people. Am I right to do so? Am I wrong? Is it like the old Sith story of Darth Plagueis who shared all his knowledge of the dark side with his apprentice and was ultimately destroyed by him? Or is it more like the lost city of Atlantis where untold knowledge and teachings lay?

Worst thing schools ever did...
Cut wood shop, metal shop, auto shop and drafting.
You know, teach kids things that will help them learn a useful trade or skill. Then teach them to balance a check book and pay a bill.

Well, those good manufacturing jobs that utilized those skills went away because our leaders broke one of this thread's cardinal rules: they taught others everything they knew about manufacturing.

This happened after WWII. This nation of ours went nation-building in the countries we ground into dust during that war. It was a brain drain or skills drain of epic proportions.

Then after NAFTA, China came into long-shuttered steel mills and other urban wastelands and packed up entire factories and shipped them back home. :censored:

I'm the same, I get some sense of... I don't know what when I realise someone else has learned from what I know but, here's the secret: you can never pass on "all you know", some can grasp certain concepts & not others...

Besides that, there's some things you simply can't teach, like common sense, problem solving, etc, you either know it or you don't; so, even if you pass on everything you've learned, you're still not passing on everything you know...

I used to work with young teenagers & really enjoyed it because it gave me that sense of... I don't know what; I'm looking at getting back into it because, I believe, some of the things I know, although they can be taught by others, will die with me, they're dying arts...

AFAIK, one of the kids I used to work with is now an apprentice mechanic &, given what I know about him, I believe he will go a long way in the industry, he's simply that good at what he does; I have a lot of acquired knowledge & experience, he has a natural talent; I didn't teach him as much as guide him...

I enjoy watching restoration & fabrication type tv shows, I find them not only entertaining but, educational; in doing so I've learned that people like Ryan Freidlinghaus, Dave Kindig, etc are successful because they are unique, as are their talents, which can't be taught; the really interesting part about those two in particular is neither has any formal training...

I am actually a little disappointed with the deepness of the conversation.

I want to know the answers to questions like....

How do you throw out a garbage can?
Who put the alphabet in alphabetical order?
Why do we bake cookies and cook bacon?
Why do noses run and feet smell?

Here's one for you Bob. Who names things, I mean in the beginning didn't someone just have to look at something and form a sound to indicate what that was? I mean a word couldn't exist had it not been just yanked out of thin air in the first place.and how did they get everyone to go along with it? Was there a commissioner of words? If so, what was he called? Who decided that?
And what was the original language?

I do bake my bacon BTW, you should try it, it's amazing.

Since we're keeping it clean around here....

My younger siblings use that body wash crap. I hate when i forget to pack a bar of soap when I visit. I feel so weenie using a loofa. And I feel like the jel never washes off.
I think it's a new generation thing. They never get dirty enough to need a real soap.

And I just learned a little while ago that tide powdered laundry soap make a great hand cleaner too. Put a little bin of tide by the sink. Wet hands, dip fingertips, lather and rinse. I was amazed how much grease it removed. I think it's works the better than gojo or orange stuff..
