Hi everyone. A couple weeks ago I got a free 5.5hp gx160 of a guy down the road and I've been cleaning it up and planning to put it on a go kart. Now I'm thinking of making a drift trike as it will be cheaper and even a bit more appealing to me.
Due to the price of buying an axle, bearings, hubs, wheels/tyres, bearings, etc. separately, I'm looking at getting them in a kit off ebay.
At first I found this one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Huffy-Sl...409941?hash=item3aca6f8755:g:ojgAAOSwHoFXtWcw which seems good but now I'm thinking a 20mm axle may not be strong enough and it says its 620mm wide (not sure if thats the axle or to the outside of the tyres when assembled) which may be to narrow?
I've also been looking at this one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Huffy-Sl...156474?hash=item3d201389fa:g:2vQAAOSw0fhXjCDv which has a stronger 25mm axle and is 880mm wide which seems a bit more appropriate for a go kart?
Any advice on which one I should go for would be great.

Also I'm looking at using the front end of a bmx bike but would it be sufficient to only have v-brakes on the front and not have any on the back?
Oh and I think they both come with a 41t sprocket. Would this be appropriate with those tyres and say a 10t centrifugal clutch?

Thanks
-Jacob

That ratio is fine for those wheels, 4.1:1 is a good amount of torque with a gx160. Just to answer that, oh and Chancer those kits that were in that range didn't have wheels :/ Although, they did have clutches, chains and good sprockets.. The first kit you listed seems like it's cheap and well designed for trikes, if you find something cheaper then go for it

You might as well put brakes on the back, you already would have a disk!

620mm is VERY narrow.. 2 feet wide. The 880 is what I would go with just to be safe :D

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'm going with the second one.

Also, just noticed the link for the second one in my original post is playing up and coming up with a sleeping bag. Tried editing it and it saves with the right link but then goes back to the sleeping bag so heres a pic if anyone is interested.

40mm?

Have you thought about going with a 40mm axle set up?

I note your an aussie (guessing from the sellers you're looking at) so thought i would let you know as an aussie who sells this stuff what your other options are..

The issues with the parts your linking to here are this
is only a 25 mm axle IMO 40mm are a more sturdier set up
Its also much easier to get here in oz replacement parts for 40mm axles.

The sprocket that those set ups use looks like a lower tooth (52 tooth i think from memory of the ones i have )set up which will burn out your clutch very quickly after a few rides your much better using a larger rear sprocket size for drift trikes so that you get good life from your clutch.Clutches cost 65 bucks plus in australia for the most very basic of clutches so its an important consideration.

I can do you a great deal on a 40mm set up I sell with all anodised parts hubs sprocket carrier brake disc carrier bearing carriers and that has weld in bearing carrier brackets that is a much better choice than pillow blocks as they allow flex for the bearings.

I also carry these same setups and will do 10$ off the price listed here for the same parts if you are going to go the 25mm route.

ill upload some images shortly for you to compare

245$ for that KIT

Got check at BMI karts they start a 139$

Id say thats aussie dollars there mate and you have to add postage to australia on top- There's a lot of weight in those kits so posting an axle kit to Australia from the usa would be cost prohibitive in the end assuming that's where the OP is located.

As you're making a drift trike and the rear wheels will have virtually no traction meaning your rear brakes will be basically next to useless it's imperative to have Good quality front brakes preferably a hydraulic set up ... again i can help you out there as well
re sprockets your best off with a good ratio like 62 / 12 IMO

No guessing involved...he filled out a profile location and it appears in the upper right hand corner of his posts. You should do the same .
