Comet TAV 2 plastic cover mounting question

Hey guys, does anyone happen to know what size bolts are used for mounting the torque converter plastic cover on the tav2 with the mounting plate? I lost the ones that it came with and don't have anything even close to give me an idea of what to pick up at the hardware store.

Anyone that can help will earn themselves a heartfelt "atta boy". Thanks!

I'm sure it is metric. Did you measure the hole to see how many mm wide it is?

guessing M4, M5, or M6 and like 10 - 12mm long.

Just throw it away it helps hold in too much heat. Bad for belts, make a shield.

Well first:
throwing the cover away isn't chaning the threads in the backplate to mount it.. so the bolts will be the same anyways.

second: the cover is not only to protect the belt or any moving part from getting touched (or catching clothes and hair) it's main objective is keeping the belt and sheaves dry and clean!
So while heat can destroy a belt;
sand, dirt and grime will do so much quicker!!

If your belts heats up too quickly... chances are it's the gear ratio not the shroud causing the issue

The bolts btw are indeed M6x12 (6mm wide 12mm long std metric bolts)
it comes with collared hexheaded bolts (to help reducing the chances of fraying the shroud)
frankly, an allen head looks much nicer and does the same

Sorry for the delay in getting back on here. Was busy at home. Now back at work where I have time to goof off on the internet.

I never thought about heat wearing out belts, which makes sense, but I did think about mud, sand, rocks, tree branches, my leg, etc. screwing up my belt. Plus, It's too much trouble to fab a clutch cover when I've got this one. So, while the advice is appreciated, I'm gonna use the plastic cover.


BTW, you guys are awesome. How lucky are we to be able to just ask a question like this in a forum and get the answer?

And most of you are cool about it too. Much appreciated!

I was out running errands and was gonna grab the bolts while I was out, so I couldn't measure them.

And I'm lazy.

M5 bolts are not correct. I bought them and tried them. Too small. I got some M6 to try now. I have a knock off 30 series if that matters.

I haven't guessed bob, I unbolted them from my chinese Tav2 Kit [cast backplate] and measured them;
caliper and threadgauge... std M5x12

that means either you got the wrong bolts by accident (lose bolts from a drawer can end up in a wrong drawer)
or your backplate is differently threaded than mine...

An original Comet though comes with 1/4"-20x1/2" thread forming screws since the backplate originally is untapped.

But at least my chinese is metric.

But to be sure.. I'll remeasure them tomorrow (it's 2:45 am here and I'm too lazy right now)

I got them from Home Depot. They were pre-packaged in plastic. M5 12mm.

They fell straight to the bottom? I don't know. This is the only TC I have tried it on.
It is possible they were mislabeled. I will measure and see what I get.

I was in a hurry before work.

I really only wanted the cover for a spot for Stickers!

DIYGK has the right side covered, so I can pass on the left.

Update: 5mm from HomeDepot did not fit for me. 6mm from the hardware store did.

OH my.. ohhhhh my I made a booboo...

you are absolutely correct.. M6 it is..
just grabbed my digital caliper, pressed on... and it reads -0.83mm
and worse: I had it set to -0.85mm (but forgot)

My fault! (corrected above)

frankly.. that shouldn't have happened.. the original hex head is 10mm
(metric guys know that that's a clue already.. since M5's use 8mm heads and M6 10mm)
but I measured the allen head I put in so I haven't checked the head (not even my own obviously )
now checked the original bolt and (after resetting the caliper) it reads 5.84mm.. M6 it is
and that cheap thread gauge is going to the bin!
