Why not???? It's customary to use equal weapons when dueling!!!!

But...yeah...we'll see....I've been wrong before....(can't remember when.....but then again, yesterday is blurry these days...)

oh no.. stupid WE...
WE hasn't asked the HIM about them horsecount .. has WE?

So, let's fix that shall we?

What kind of engine has your kart?
the 6:1 ideal ratio on 10-11" wheels is recommended for our usual suspects of 5-7hp engines..

if you have lees hp, you need much steeper ratios (like 9:1 or something)

While...that's true....let's review! He was MOVING the kart with a much steeper gear ratio....just smoking the clutch in the process!

Good point though...we DON'T know do we?

re-reading the thread again.. he said it's a 208cc... (sounds like a B&S to me)
where his assumed 6.5hp seems indeed at least plausible...
at the very least it'll be around the same as the similar sized flathead (i.e. 5hp), or am I mistaking?

still, a better guess would require an image of the engine in question, just to be sure we think in the same direction here ;)

Please maiden, add a pic of the kart and engine.

My kart works great with its 4:1 gear ratio, (even after smoking many times) so let's not get ready to always point finger at the gear ration whenever this sort of problem happens.
What your problem could be is the sides of the shoes. I had a problem where my shoes would lock up, so we took it apart, and my dad found that the edges of the shoes once engaged, would get stuck by sticking the the side of the clutch.

And this happened with TWO CLUTCHES? ??? WOW!!!!! That IS weird! Maybe read this thread and let the OP answer before you start second guessing us?

EDIT: And we don't even have kart weight yet...but I'm guessing for this information to be pertinent YOU weigh 240 lbs?

She's a brand new clutch guys, brand new 60t on my axle and 10t on the clutch. When I saw the smoke I shut it down and the clutch was red hot. I Wonder if I've got some unnecessary load somewhere along the axle maybe. Or perhaps these clutches are garbage....
I'll get a weight on it tomorrow, weird thing is it happened with my little brother on it. 135lbs kid. (Had some serious convincing to do, to assure him it was "safe").... And it still did the same. I'll post some pics of these two clutches as well.
Thanks and have a great night!

Thanks...and yeah...we had to ask....but go back to what I said about checking the Axle/wheel with no chain you REALLY. shouldn't have a gearing issue....but possibly a bearing one!

So take the chain off and spin the whole rear axle setup? And we want it tokeep spinning until it come to a nice gradual stop. I'll give it a try tomorrow and see how it goes.

Thanks

Hm.. odd indeed..

the last thing I can think of is the actual throttle..

are you sure you can rev up all the way depressing the pedal, or is it limited by something?

Thing is, cent clutches don't like to be semi-engaged and between start of engagement to full lock are a few hundred rpms to cover.. even worse that's ~half way of your already narrow rev-band of the industrial engine..

thus any rev limiter in between (purposely installed or pinched cable, insufficient amount of pedal movement etc..) can cause the clutch to smoke.
