When it comes to all things internet....I'm sooo the dullest knife in the drawer I'm a spoon.

So...my question is this: when I open a thread with a dozen huge pictures that take 5 minutes apiece to load...is that using up data more than thumbnails?

Another thing that helps me, and I am about as dull as Poboys Spoon. When I download MY pics from Phone to computer it asks (Iphone6) small medium or large? scaling the pic size to less KB, I pic medium (34kb) and they load to the Forum WAAAY faster.
[edit]
Is that what super meant by compressing?
Sharp as a fork here!

Fork, knife, or spoon....some "tools" are just pains in the rear! :lolgoku:

You do bring up an interesting idea though...and one I've been meaning to investigate....linking my phone to a computer.... I have a good computer...just no ISP for it. So...I'm sure I could probably hook up into the USB to view information..but...the phone would still be using the same amount of data to feed the computer, right?

And does it work the other way around? Could I edit and post links in the computer and then imput the information into my phone for internet broadcast?

Told ya...I'm not only a spoon...I'm a wooden spoon from a half century ago!

And..a little off topic...but...I've been thinking about reviving my little recording studio and downloading some editing software to that computer...and making some music videos....

First off...I need a good pair of headphones....then maybe a cheap set of drums...I can play bass on my guitar (RP 200)...but I can't get a decent drum track. with my drum machine options....(maybe editing software would allow me to, IDK!)

Of course...I wouldn't mind a real bass either...I might even pick up a few gigs playing it....having big hands and long fingers, and being a lead guitarist makes bass pretty easy for me....

I'm a Quality Engineer at a big stamping plant. We have three locations in Grand Rapids Michigan, two in Kentucky, one in Georgia, one in Mexico, two in Spain, and one in Ireland.

Although I'm low on the totem pole, I hardly ever even go around town lol.

to answer the initial question:
yes.. the thumbnails you see (both the attachment thumbs as well as thumbs from external hosts like flickr or photopukeit.. god I hate that site)

Anyways, the thumbnails are MUCH smaller than the original pic, that's what they're made for, a quick preview with low pixel (and byte) counts.

especially on 4-5meg pics that does make sense,
unfortunately tons of users (especially visitors using a phone for some reason)
have no idea how to upload pics to diygk... and most have no idea either how to choose and use a pichost properly..
so they end up with PB and copy and paste links...

in fact PB is the worst of all, since they always send huge amounts of overhead!
(the thumbnail link for example if used incorrectly tries to render a webpage and includes not only the full sized pic, but also a facebook loginform and crap like that)
So no difference there since the only filter in line will be your browser rendering nothing but the actual image. (the data transfered to your phone can still be the full size webpage)

But I'm starting to rant over photopukeit again...
sorry...

Final answer: yes thumbnails are indeed smaller and less consuming on your data rates indeed.

But I doubt that is of help..
embedding full size images is not against any rule, so you can't do anything but to kindly ask others to use thumbnails when possible.
Even better: DIYGK attachments... ideal way of posting pics!
Everything else sucks one way or another!

Thanks for your answer Alex ..."that other guy rubbed me the wrong way!" JK.

But ....my plan has unlimited data....BUT!!! After a certain amount....they slow down the already slow service....Sooo....it takes even LONGER to load those huge pics !

I got a message that I'm now at 85% useage at just a little over 1/2 a month and my speed will be reduced until the 4th of next month....because I got to view a Poster sized pic of a frigging respirator???? Like after the 10 years as a professional painter I needed a picture of one?

So do the pics automatically start using your data when you click on a thread. Without you even "choosing" to view the pic!!!?
That does suck.
Who "rubbed you the wong way"?? I did not hear you complaining while you were being....
Oh family Forum!

Yepp the pictures will load as soon as you choose to open a thread
(well, technically you can prevent images to be loaded, but noone's ever used that feature really)

if you don't abort (or close the thread before the images are loaded) they will get pulled off the internetz and right onto your viewing device...

PS no cussing involved btw.. and all of you would understand nearly all of it I'd assume..
just google translate some of your favourites and you'll see why ;)

You used to be able to select text only in certain browsers if I remember correctly.

Some forums also have a "PDF" version that is text only.
