Thanks!

The Guy looked at it, Checked it with straight edge and feeler gauge, QUICKLY RAN IT ON A BELT SANDER????, and said it is pretty straight. Don't know why he had to run it on a belt sander to check? I almost sheet my shorts.

Lol, did he put any dykem on it or anything? I guess he was looking for a high spot or something. I would just use an indicator.

I have nothing planned for the evening except for sanding. The estimate, if nothing else, gave me confidence to continue with this path (for now). It will be more gratifying if I do it myself, by hand, with paper and fury. lol

If the $30 guy doesn't respond by the time I meet my mark (if I'm not happy with it), maybe I'll take you up on that.

Thanks

He grabbed a Big Jug of something but didn't see exactly what it was. Maybe 2-3 gallon white jug?

I managed to not lose any C-clips holding on the rockers. I found 1 half way down the driveway from the garage!

Well, I want to give him the benefit of the doubt and say he painted it with Dykem, then sanded it to see where it was removed.

I want to see it run as badly as you do lol, so if thirty minute's of my time get's you on track, I can donate lol. Beside's, most of these guy's here don't know I know how to do stuff lol, it'd be good for them to see me do something they consider work.

See...Bob...I told ya I'd do it with a belt sander! I actually could, and finish sand it on plate glass...but it's not without risk.

Sounds like you were better off staying away from that guy!!!! Two hour set-up??? Did that include 1 and a half at the bar? "Set em up again, Sam!"

No kidding, I just googled the image to see if there's some challenge I'm not understanding, I just can't see anything.

Clamp it in a vice, square it with a test indicator in the spindle, drop .050 (or less, since you've been sanding), cut. I can't see more than thirty minutes of effort here.

I've managed to break 2 of these $4 pieces of glass so far. Neither when sanding. I got 3 more. I'm going to take some BETTER measurements to see where I am at and give it a real go tonight. By earlier measurements, depending on where I measured, I had taken off 0.010" in some areas and added 0.001" in other spots. You can see why I wanted a pro to look at it.

I will test my caliper against my feeler gauges and then get some more gooder measurements and then turn on Karate Kid in the garage and put some hours in.

I actually told you exactly how to set it up and "map" measuring points of fins in your other thread....That's exactly why you map measurements and measure off of Sharpie dots on the fins...You establish a baseline that only varies by amount removed. AT THOSE POINTS...an average and a flat surface...and you're good to go... unfortunately...without it...the ONLY thing you can do now is check for flatness, guess at amount removed, or CC the combustion chamber.

I tried to go off a fin using the inside calipers. The fins are not flat and calipers are not long. I marked a spot and and took repeated measurements. They were not repeatable. I was hoping lots of measurements and taking and average would be good enough, but probably not. I post a pic of measuring different ways.

How can that not be repeatable...a dot on a fin doesn't change. Are measuring out of perpendicular or at opposite angles?

If the calipers are located in the same general direction in relation to the fin (say 45°) and the calipers are 90° to the head surface the variance (if any, would be sub thousands) ?

My measuring technique sucks. I have gotten better and picked better mapping points. I will post pics later. I have lots of sanding to do. I will safely assume I took off 0.010 (the average of all my measurements say I took of 0.005" YES I HAVE A SPREADSHEET).

I will try to take off 0.025" and re-access. With my new mapping points, I'll be able to measure +/- 0.001" with 'nough confidence.

I'll remeasure and maybe CC the head at that point. Or just finish it up with finer grit and put it on.

The power of average is strong with this one! Even bad measurements, when taken in large quantity and averaged, can lead to pretty accurate results (Except when they say you added material?)!

Head Map Measurements.
Good Enough to sand.
Shooting for 0.030" more.

Finally I can sand again! Said nobody ever.

I ran out of 60 grit quickly. Not sure the best way to do this for mass removal. Silicon Carbide, Aluminum Oxide, Emery Cloth???

The Silicon Carbide dry - seems to gunk up fast
With WD-40 - Not sure it removes as much material as the dry per sheet of paper.

I am using 1 sheet of 60 grit Silicon Carbide Sand Paper per 0.001".
Going to buy some more. One guy told me to start with a grit in the 30's, but I'm afraid.lol

Call dyno cams. You will have to ship it to them but it won't be anywhere near that price.

Just called Dyno Cams. Spoke to Timmy the Master Engine Builder. He said if I ship it to him, he will cut it for like $30 or $40 bucks!!!!!

Awesome Suggestion! Thanks again!

That's more in line with what I expected, it's truly not difficult. It's like machining 101, cut a flat surface flatter lol.

Medium sized flat rate box to N.C. is $13.
I'm going to ask him get it flat, if he needs to and then cut off an additional 0.025"
My best measured guess is I have removed ~0.010.

If he has to clean it up first to make it level??? We will give us an even wider window. Let's say he has a nice clean flat surface that has been already cut 0.005" to 0.0015"

If he cuts an additonal 0.025", we will be at 0.030" to 0.040" cut from original.

A deck height near zero, gasket thickness near 0.030", hemi head milled 0.030 to 0.040"....
Predator is 2.76" bore 2.16" stroke, the 214cc in this chart is close with a slight longer stroke. The 208cc has shorter stroke.
http://www.badassminibikes.com/GX200CompressionVer5.pdf

I should be safe on Piston 2 Valve clearance and increase the compression from stock 8.5 : 1, to a nicer ~10 to 10.5:1. Nothing crazy.

18cc head with +0.020" connecting rod and stock gasket would be right around 10.5 I believe. Seems to match up on chart and calculator

But is the surface still Flat. and when you ask him to remove .030 and you have already removed .004.
The sign usually says
50 bucks an hour
100 bucks if you worked in it first!!!

Doesn't matter, all you have to do is square up to it and the mill will make it flat, parallel to whatever square up with. That's why we use parallel's.

If I were milling a cube of material square, I would start with a skim cut on all six sides to get it square, then mill to size from there.

We trust the machine is square, therefore anything we cut on it becomes square.

You can, and should, check the machine periodically by "tramming" it with a test indicator.

But I agree, sanding was really not the way to go lol, and obviously ineffective ultimately. What's done is done though, and he has someone to clean it up now lol.
