I will be starting my dingo build soon and I am wanting to use the predator 420CC (12 HP) motor. Is that too much for a 30 series TC to handle? The price difference in the 30 and 40 series is pretty astronomical and I want to stay with a 30 series if I can.

Thanks

yes the 30 series TC is going to be to small for the predator 420. you are going to need to use a 40 series TC. it will handle the power of a predator 420.

To be honest, I've never been a fan of the 30 series even on smaller engines like the 212. The belt just isn't wide enough to get good "bite" on the driven. This means that the belt slips on hill climbing while the engine still has more to offer.

This might in part be due to the engine. If the RPMs get bogged down too much, then the centrifugal force in the drive unit might not be sufficient to hold onto the belt. Just another idea, as it seems most people focus on the driven when it comes to belt slip.

I guess ill go down to the 301CC. Those 40 series TC are high!

Why? The 30 series is rated for up to an 8 hp motor. The 301cc is 8 hp. Why wouldn't it work?

You are correct. I didn't see the post where you said you wanted to go to the 301cc. If that is indeed 8HP, then the 30 series should work fine

Ok good deal. The kit im looking at has the back plate that just mounts to the motor. So, no jackshaft required, correct?

In a way....yes. The jackshaft was a mounting area for the driven in the other types of kits. You might still need a jackshaft though if you need to gear lower than what sprocket size will allow without one

Why? The 30 series is rated for up to an 8 hp motor. The 301cc is 8 hp. Why wouldn't it work?

The key part of that sentence is "up to 8hp"; smaller engines can be modified to produce more than the factory spec hp & the TC would still be safe to use...

The truth of the matter is hp ratings on industrial engines are understated, meaning the particular engine may produce more than the rated hp but, it will not produce less than the rated hp so, an engine advertised as producing 8hp may, in fact, produce 9hp or more in its standard form; once you start modding said engine, it will produce even more hp, rendering a 30 series TC useless...

Also, 8hp engines have a 1" shaft, not 3/4"...

I put a 420 on my Streaker buggy, with one of the $100 eBay Chinese torque converters. The torque converter mounting holes had to be modified to work on the engine and clear one of the oil filler necks, and I had to modify the engine mount to accommodate the larger footprint, as well as ensure the sprockets matched up with the axle, as it is a differential and therefor a fixed sprocket location. It works great, an can put the power down no problem, even up hill. If you want to see pics, let me know and I will take some when I get back in town on Friday.

How many belts have you gone through? What is the gearing on the kart?

No belts yet. Still looks new. If the torque converter is rated up to 18hp, why would I go through belts any faster than normal? Besides a custom header, I have no mods on the motor. The governor is still hooked up too.

There is a 10T sprocket on the torque converter, I don't remember how many teeth are on the axle sprocket. I can take a look tomorrow when I get home.

Let me clear the air here. I run 30 series TAVs on the 420cc Predator motor in most all of my wake winch builds. I have never run this set up in a kart before however. My winches run <60 seconds at a time whereas you could easily spend >30 minutes ripping your kart in a single go so that is something to factor in. I have to modify the case cover on the 420cc so the TAV mounting plate will fit. THIS is how I do that.

What 30 series TC is rated to 18hp?

This has me confused too, or are you saying that you got the 40 series TC. The way you posted it sounded like you were saying you are using a 30 series. They are rated for 8HP
