What the heck is this DIY GOKARTS. forum all about, anyway?

Well....to me, this is the greatest forum on Earth....and here's why:

Other than a "Tonka Toy" or possibly "GI JOE" forum....what other subject could transport old men back to pre-pubescent teens?

Maybe I'm a little skewed....because I dreamt of owning a minibike....and it never happened....however, I did have a kart....

Regardless, whether you had your childhood dream, or are reliving it now, (either personally,...or vicariously through your children) , it's still a magical transformation back to the past....and better times...

Magically....along with a reversion to those cherished childhood times, seems to come a reverence for old time values.

Ok....enough of the "misty-eyed old man angle".....let's look at some of the kids that are coming up.

They are now where we were many years ago....but more importantly...they are DOING SOMETHING IN THE REAL WORLD! !!!. Too many are living in "virtual reality ".....and the truth is..it's making them fat,lazy, useless lumps.

Finally, the absolute best thing about this forum....is the promotion of family values, and the encouragement it provides for family interaction, and the parent/ child. experiences that will last a lifetime.

I'm extremely proud to be a part of this forum....(even though I'm the black sheep)....

I found this place when I was recovering from the major wound's I received from a serious car accident (unfortunately self indused). It helped me hang on to what little sanity I had at the time.

If I remember correctly, I believe that the first time I seriously contributed to a thread was in one where the OP couldn't figure out how to remove the bearings from his axle, due to no setscrews.

One handed, I went out to the farm workshop, grabbed the same size and style bearing off the shelf, and somehow managed to figure out how to upload the photos of the cam lock locking collar type retaining system so the OP wouldn't throw away a perfectly good axle....

^^ This. I have given a lot of advice based on my knowledge & experience but, I have also, learned a lot since joining...

I first joined to gain help & advice while building a kart for my, then, 6yo daughter, which I don't think would have happened without the help of this forum...

Im only 33yo, but for me it was RC cars/trucks. Like OP said...I dreamt of having cool hobby grade ones as a kid, but never did. I was 25yo before I had my first real RC truck...as 38mph nitro truck. For a few years I was on a RC forum EVERY day. Had to back off on the RC stuff a bit as it can get expensive fast. This forum has helped a lot since I got my daughter a go kart for a great deal. Im almost done turning a riding mower into a offroad rig...so we can take the 2 machines out on some trails.

Probably the biggest and best thing is the connection between parent and child.....(even. if as a parent you now have to do THAT vicariously) !!!!!

But yeah....it's a time machine....and you get to go there will other "has beens" ...."never was" .....or "wanna be's"...... and nobody really cares.....because we identify with the "newbies" (whether it be age....or experience with karts)....and NOBODY. cares if you're new to the forum or not...you get the respect you deserve.....(actually, you get a break as a newbie).... but, ....I've never seen it been about seniority here, but trolls with bad attitudes, and despite mods and owner bending over backwards for trouble making newbies...(why...IDK...).....at the end of the day....it's always come out they were just here to start trouble....and (IMHO).....we're better off without them....

But this isn't MY forum...I only visit here, but when to me....we bend over backwards to people who dis this forum and it's members....just because they are new....and chastise, disillusion, and chase away some of the most dedicated, senior, and active relevant contributing members....to defend idiots that come here with the obviously singular thought of provoking trouble....and are DEFENDED under the misguided fantasy that maybe....if we kiss their arrogant rear ends....not only will they make model members, but we will increase the amount of NON TROUBLE MAKING new members....not VICE VERSA.....

Oh......yeah. maybe once in awhile lightning has struck and a real problem member has turned out all right.....but.....while this is the greatest forum every.....it is hard on the best and brightest.....for the odds against....new , worst, and useless trolls that show up occasionally.....becoming worthwhile contributors is very slim....

I don't have much to say other than I'm slightly addicted. My wife puts up with all my projects, but has no real interest in karting. So then I come here, and realize that this is like one of the best support groups for karting, so it only fuels the projects and I love seeing what other members are doing. I'm very guilty of wasting time on my phone, and much of it is spent here, and it doesn't feel like a waste to me.

Also, one great function of a forum for the majority of members and non members alike, is the ability to access information for their own builds or repairs and maintenance. I'm definitely guilty of joining other forums just to get a piece of info for my honda, or have a question answered after failing to find an answer on a forum due to bad advice (go figure). So I guess I'd just like to point out that you can, for the most part, answer questions based on your experience and the original posters intent (to a degree even without locations, pictures, or good descriptions). I don't think I have a ton of experience, so I answer what questions I feel like I have answers to. Life is too short to be offended over random crap that gets posted by an 11 yr old with a 5 second attention span that needs his problem fixed now, just like he gets answers for his homework on google, and his corn dog cooked in 1 minute in the microwave. The ease by which technology (especially mobile surfing) has overtaken everyone's lives is literally mind numbing. Lots of knowledge out there, with little room for wisdom to start eking its way in.

I find it incredibly easy to surf on my desktop, and write detailed explanations, reports, whatever; all with a keyboard. It's taxing to use my phone to type out anything, and a joke to post more than one picture on this forum with a phone. There is a two step process (post/go advanced) to even get to an area where you could post. The layout is not responsive so you have to work around the defaults, let alone find a minuscule button to fill out your profile. So I can definitely see why billy in between YouTube ads and the last 30 seconds of his cooking corn dog doesn't bother to post something close to legible before he starts checking his snapchats, Instagram, or any other subscription feed competing for his attention. The world of mobile browsing is beyond upon us. between tablets and mobile, the stats I see from google on YouTube/website is that roughly 60% is on a device, and 40% is on the ol desktop. The mobile/tablet stats get even higher, the younger you go. I don't know what I was getting at other than, mobile phones make me kind of slower, more impatient, and dumber when 'typing', and I would reason that the younger the user, the more impatient you get with information.

What's the matter? Didn't search the forum? You miss that 1/16" wide button at the top of the page that says search? The same can be said for any of the menus and buttons here. I happen to love the simplicity and layout of this forum on desktop, and mobile (because I already know how to navigate), but for the 60 percent era out there, it's just frustrating. Ok I think I'm done rambling. This is what happens on a phone while typing. Your brain starts taking tangents because its tired of waiting for that one finger to do the job. Wth am I even talking about? thats enough internet for me today, or for the next 5 seconds.

I will say that I'm on my smartphone 95% of the time, and for the most part find it just as easy as on my laptop.

Just have to use the pinch/pull function of smartphones and blow up the website is all.

Now the search function I do have to open in a new tab, which can be frustrating, but not too much.

Agreed though that with the attention span of most kids now days it makes it near impossible for them to function...in any format, not just on our site.

I say our site because though good sir Robert does own and care for it, and the mods do also care for it, it is the people, the members that make it. Not the one timers, or the kids that can't even comprehend how to make a coherent sentence, but the people that stick around. The people that take the time to at least try and help others, and follow the rules.
