I had the cart on it's side to work on the carb again.

then when I tried to start it the hose going from the OHV cover to the carb pulled oil into the carb! Did laying the kart on it's side let oil go somewhere it wasn't supposed to? I am 95% sure that those 2 points are supposed to be connected and it didn't put oil into the carb the other day.

I have had the carb apart several times now, so now the gaskets are starting to look rough. So today I went and bought a new carb off ebay. Before that arrives, I plan to clean the fuel tank. What is the best way to do that?

I am hoping that a new carb and a clean gas tank will get the engine running right. Once that is taken care of I will then get a new cen clutch and look into new brake pads.

When you sit an engine on its side it allows oil to get into the head.

BTW that tube is the valve cover breather.

So when the oil went into the valve cover from the head it went into the carb =)

To clean the gas tank, drain it, take it off and swish some gas into it. I've used an air compressor to break some of the debris off the sides and it worked well. That's how I normally clean my tanks and it works well for me. When you're cleaning the carbs are you cleaning with normal carb spray or are you boiling in lemon juice?

I used carb spray. at this point the gaskets on the carb are shot, and since a new carb was $20 I figured Id go with that.

It makes sense to be that the hose on the valve cover was a breather...but it would seem like the previous owner had it routed to the carb.

is the second hose nipple(higher up, not the fuel inlet) on the carb supposed to be a breather, a fuel return....or what? Over flow?

On some engines the breather isn't connected and instead has a filter on it. On other engines it goes into the carb. Reason being is when you're driving some oil is getting into the valve cover so when it goes into the carb it gets burned up, it shouldn't be as much as you're describing but it could be getting mixed with gas and making it seem like it's a lot. I would think this could also be a result of a bad head gasket and MAYBE over filling with oil. Don't quote me on that though.

I had the hose connected to the carb and it drove OK. It was only after having laid the kart on it's side that a good bit of oil (enough I could see it go through the clear hose) got into the carb. So I think Im safe in assuming it was because the kart was on it's side.
