I made myself some custom Tecumseh air filter adapters

Today was the last day of work for the week, and since we were kinda coasting today, I made myself a couple of custom air filter adapters for my beloved Tecumsehs ;). Like most things available for Tecumsehs, there is a small selection and there are not great. I used to make these when I raced Tillotson race carbs, but I decided to make one for my H50 now that I'm running an 8HP Tecumseh carb and my upcoming OHH60 build that I'm going to run my new Streaker.

I made them out of 20% glass filled polycarbonate, which is a great heat insulator (softens @ 329 degrees, so I'm good there!) and has great impact and tensile strength. I radiused it to create velocity instead the air hitting a dead wall like the aluminum ones available for a Tecumseh. I have this mounted a primer carb for demonstration purposes, but I'll be running adjustable carbs on the engines.

Since I'm going to be building myself a pretty rowdy OHH engine, I will making a lot of custom stuff for it, so stay tuned! ;)

Here is an example of the ones available for Tecumsehs - and they are cheap enough - but as you can see, the air just crashes into the cup. They are OK, but the style I made is much better.

Wow. Awesome work. You are lucky to have the skill, knowledge and tools to be able to do that. Yours looks way better than the other one. Thats gonna work great.

Very nice. You ought to make a few and sell then on here. I have the other style you posted.

I'd really like to see a straight carb intake for the OHH models. well sorta straight. I'm sure you understand what I'm picturing in my head.

I'm actually going to be making one of those pretty soon. The stock intake is terrible for making HP. I always made them back when I raced these engines. If you think you may be interested, I'll make a coupla' three of them -lol.

I'm assuming you mean eliminating the intake manifold?

No, not eliminating it - just fabricating a short intake that is about 1.5" long and curved to make the carb sit level on the left side of the engine (facing the rear). This set-up will require a fuel pump, because the carb will not be below the fuel tank any longer. The stock intake is run for most yard karts, but they hinder power at high RPM.

I'll probably run a Robertson header like this. I've had good luck with them in the past.

I like what you've done. I will be watching this closely with questions. I had one of these motors given to me and after putting a new carb(with manual choke) on it, it runs pretty dang good. Wouldn't mind opening it up a little.

Possibly, but I would need the inside diameter and spacing on the mounting holes. I can't commit to anything because I do not own the shop, but when I get some slack time, I may be able to make some more. I probably have enough leftover material (drops) to make several more.

This is very expensive, but may be what you are looking for: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tecumseh-37537k-/161533911686?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item259c2be286

Not sure if the carb would sit level with this part though.

That intake was designed for the Tillys came on the Motorsports OHH's, but you're right that the carb goes down hill. I am going to make one very similar, but I am going curve mine so that carb sits level. That way I can run a bowl type carb with no issues.

That one sold but if you search you can get another one from china for 20 bucks

About the adapters.... Would one made out of wood and polyurethaned work? I don't have a laythe but I can sand some wood ;-)

I'm not sure if wood would hold up to the vibration, but if you used a hard wood, it may work. I always make them by making the flanges and welding them to a curved piece of thin tubing.

Not to hi-jack but I look over that ebay sellers OHH Motorsports intake saw this when looking thru all his other stuff

a Tecumseh primer carb with an adjustable main jet

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-tecumse...847?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item259bd1ad67

That would be an OK option for a mild engine (and MUCH better than a non-adjustable carb), but the primer carbs have a smaller diameter inside to speed up airflow, which results in good performance and torque up to the 3600 governed RPM, but not too above that. Especially not good for engines turning 6000+ RPM.
