Okay so I brought this up a while back when introducing myself but my plan is to build a motorized recliner chair just because I enjoy fabricating and challenges involved.

Current plans are to use a 212 Predator with a 10 tooth torque converter and a 60 tooth rear. I don't understand tire sizes just yet but my plan calls for approximately 10.5 inch tall tires netting me approximately 20 MPH.

I thought I wanted to use a torque converter with single wheel drive as this will be used primarily on asphalt or occasionally hard pack dirt and I want a tight turn radius. But in trying to educate myself I found a post indicating a torque converter may be a problem with single wheel drive. Can anyone shed some light on this or shoot holes in the rest of the build plans so far ?

Thanks much, Keith

well a TC will multiply the torque you send to the driven wheels (wheel in your case)
so using a small wheel and adding a good amount of torque you might break traction very easily with this wheel..
especially if you're trying to move a lot of weight.
(inertia and such.. nevermind)

So in the end it will be less hassle to use a live axle..
if you're concerned about your turning radius, maybe a peerless 100 mower diff is your best bet.
(it's ~$100) and you will power both wheels with the benefit of having a differential rear axle for nice tight turns ;)

Ah yes, well that would create another problem. Another reason ( I failed to state ) I was leaning away from a live axle is the very narrow width I will end up with which is yet to be determined. I am attempting to keep the frame, drive, wheels, etc, all under the perimeter of the somewhat wider than normal recliner ( a unit on CL I am going to look at Sat ) A differential would also make a custom narrow width difficult, or so I would think. I weight just under 200 and I would guess the finished recliner with frame and motor will weight another 100.

Sheesh, complications. I can already see this is going to 100 bucks me to death. : ) Oh yeah, and I am looking at extra wide recliners so I could carry a passenger. That's another 100 or 200 lbs.

Thinking out loud....taking the weight into consideration maybe a custom width live axle is the way to go.

a diff can be found for cheap on ebay/craigslist sometimes, the axles can be trimmed down,
just like any other axle could.
I paid less than 30 for example;

so, I wouldn't be too concerned about prices and or axle widths ;)

Sid, I spend other folks money pretty easily too. Just kidding, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and advice.
