My name is Keith. I enjoy metal work, fabrication, and indulging myself in goofy projects. I am in the research phase of fabricating a gas engine operated recliner. Why ? Because I can.
I hope to learn from others here on some of the choices I have with regard to engine and drive train. So far I have an old go kart frame for front end steering and a rear axle.
I see that it appears N H Northern may be a good source for an engine but I have no idea which one I may need. I also need advise on drive gearing. I hope to end up with 10 to 12 MPH.

Any experienced here that would like to help ?

Thanks much in advance, Keith

Have a look at this thread for ideas, it's not exactly the same but, same principle...

Harbor Freight is a good source of a great engine, the 212cc Predator which, on sale with a discount coupon, has been bought for as little as $85 &, at that speed, you may even get away with using their $6 wheels... but don't quote me on that...

:welcome2: Welcome to the forum. But we are all out of advice at the moment. If you check back in from time to time we may have some. Most of the time it will be good advice, some times it will only be marginal and other times it will be really bad (but in a funny way). Good Luck!

You are going to have to gear real low to only go 12mph. Do you know the weight of the recliner? Do you know the diameter of the tyres you will be using. These are all things we will need to know to figure out gering. I would hazard a gues that 11:1 would be OK for you though

I was thinking about that; geared so low, is the expense (among other things) of a TC really necessary? There are so many pro cent clutch arguments here it's not funny...

Well, I don't like the idea of something so heavy, using the cc,even if it's a slow max speed like 15mph... To me, it just seems that, if you wanted to just "creep" along like a snail, you'd be burning up the clutch. The tc would let him keep a ratio like 14:1 for pulling the weight, getting it going...... And then the overdrive to give it a little zip so he ain't crawling at a baby's pace or maxxing out the engine all the time...... :idea2:

How does this sound ? Approximate total weight 300 lbs with rider. 11 in. tires, 10 tooth TC, size 35 chain, 60 tooth rear. Top speed approximately 20 mph. If I want to go half that speed, just slow down.

Your thoughts ? Thanks, Keith

Hey and welcome on this forum! I remember my first steps here, which was quite awesome and I learned a lot!
Goodluck with your build.

PS; A recliner is something like a sofa?

Hey moderators. This would seem to me to be moving in another direction from what started as an introduction. Should this be moved to another area ? As a newbie I am going to have more questions for some of your more experienced members.

Thanks for your help. Keith
