Is there a louder or more tuned muffler for a Briggs and Stratton 5HP Model 130202?

I want to replace the stock muffler with something a little more throaty (cool sounding). Any links would be greatly appreciated.

The cylinder-shaped muffler screws in the engine. This engine is for a Rupp D300 Fun Kart.

See picture below.

Thanks!
John

IIRC, that style muffler can be easily made into a straight through by punching out the thin metal plate across the main pipe...

DON'T JUST TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, check it first!

Hi Fabro,
Thank you for the input! Please see pictures attached.

So if I knock out that little sheet metal disk with a long flat head screw driver, this will make the muffler louder or "throaty"? It was just be cool if my son could feel like the kart was souped up. I also included a picture of the kart. Even those this was considered just a Fun Kart, I love the lines of it.

Any chance I might be able to put a Pod-style air filter to replace the stock box one? Increase the airflow. I know this would entail messing with the jetting - that's if they make larger jets even. There must be Pod filter out there.

Best!
John

I would like to see some before and after numbers as to how much this "mod" contributes to anything past draining ones wallet.

You're kidding right? A K&N Pod costs like $20 (maybe), a jet is $10. I have these on 3 '72 CB500 Honda bikes. They really move because of it. BIG difference. More airflow, more HP.

Please, if you could stay on topic. I'm here for input and sharing, not skepticism.

Thanks!
John

Russ2251 doesn't get on here to talk smack to anyone. He is a very knowledgeable person when it comes to karts. If he's telling you that there is not enough power to gain versus time/$$$ , then it's for your benefit. He is not trying to be a "Debbie Downer"....
You want your son to feel as if the engine is hopped up? Do the exhaust with a free flow header and punched muffler. Remove the governor, and make a throttle stop. You end up with a mean sounding kart that has more get up n go than before...... :auto:

If it were me I'd just get a clone engine, there cheap and lots of parts and already known good mods out there.

thank you J!

that is at the very least a Clark Cyclops 440
(pricetag 750 US and up)
if it's indeed the real deal (Rupp A-Bone) add another 400-500 to that.

A kart like this deserves a period correct restoration! (well IMHO that is)

I'd say: go the full length, restore it the best you can and find an old westbend or mcCulloch engine matching your kart.

Then.. use all the money you got selling it to buy a nice Manco Amex (doesn't look too different) with a nice GX200 or clone and a handful of mods.

tons of fun in a kart.. and in case something went wrong
you haven't lost an icon and a thousand dollars ;)

I agree, Sid. We all (well, most of us) have to work within a budget. A resto can run into some $ but it's cool to stand back when you're done and say "That's how it looked new!". Even if "like new" isn't in the budget you can still come real close. A Mac 49 or WB 580 won't break the bank and fits the "period" look. But, as it belongs to someone else, he's free to do as he feels. That's the beauty of private ownership. Just because some of us love vintage karts doesn't mean eveyone who aquires one has to do what we would. Although, if they were as smart as us....(just kidding!)

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the input. It was not my intention to rattle anyones cage. As you know, we all attach a certain tone to emails, post... what have you. I just did not want have the conversation derailed. If I offended anyone I'm sorry :)

I will post some videos of the D300 project later tonight on my Youtube channel, as I got a lot of work done on it today/this weekend.

I have the '88 Briggs and Stratton 5HP which is in excellent mechanical shape. I went through the carb and replaced the diaphragm, cleaned the carb, the jet and polished the needle. I also put a new clutch on it because the pull cord was only engaging 50% of the time.

My plans for the D300 are not to do period correct restore. Even though this is not a racing kart, the lines of it are beautiful. I like the straight bumper in the front and the narrow steering hoop especially. You have to understand that I'm a designer, well, of everything. Therefore, I have the "need" to improve the form and/or function in very subtle way, whereas it does not violate or rob the period look.

I have 3 '72 CB500 in various stages of design, building.. what have you. I take cues from the approach to bikes which naturally will carry over to the karts I have.

Ok, enough about my "deep" thoughts.

I have removed the original Fun Kart plastic wheel and cut off its welded on steering shaft. I purchased a new A-Bone chrome steering shaft with the hub from RobRon (Robert Stanton... very cool guy). Cheap too. $30. This way I can mount a proper Rupp racing steering wheel. Of course they look cooler.

The entire frame, spindles will be stripped (not sandblasted) down to its mild steel... patina and all. I will clear it over with a nice Eastwood-brand flat clear made to preserve patina.

The engine has also been stripped down to bare metal and will be cleared as well. Once you see it, I think you might agree... it looks very cool. It's what I want.

As far as the muffler goes, I just want to make it throaty, but not obnoxious. this is purely a form thing. It has to sound cool. The upholstery will be the A-Bone stock kit OR I might go with a distressed brown leather like on my Honda Brat tracker CB500.

I will be losing the Rupp turbine wheels. Don't like the way they look. I will be putting Azusa Tri star wheel and a period correct slick (safety).

Like DJ said, we all are in this for many different reasons. And no restoration or build is wrong if it provides gratification and pride for the owner or the driver.. or the kid!

Thanks again guys. I will be sure to post more on this as I get more content (pictures, video, to share).

Best,
John

Hi Fire,
Thanks for the post. Sorry again, did not mean to rag. Anyway, I just need a little more noise but a bellow type of noise. Can you elaborate or send links to the parts for the exhaust? I was looking at taking the governor out, but was concerned it might damage the engine. I would be happy with sound at this point over power. I know from riding my Honda CB500 for the first time that 40 MPH felt like 75 MPH easy and I was like... and I'm not breaking the law??!! So I can imagine how fast it will feel for my son being only a inch off the ground.

Also, if there are any bolt-and-go options for just purely a cooler sound that would be great. I can't find anything out there after looking for over a hour.

Thanks!
John

Yeah, I saw those pipe, but I guess I was thrown off, because I have two "posts" that look like they were once threaded but almost gone. (see picture below). You think it's possible that I can remove these and replace them? Of course I would heat them up first and try some vice grips. If they are part of the block (solid), last resort I could cut these ofd with a angle grinder and weld on new ones.

That pipe looks mean!

Thanks!

That's a really neat looking kart and from what you described it will look awesome when finished!

Nice to see a fellow bike builder around too. Wouldn't mind seeing some pics of those projects too sometime...

Thanks Diesel! I'm finally getting my lower front fork tubes powder coated gloss black this week. I made numerous failed attempts at rattle canning and it was a nightmare. Not worth the time and money I spent.

Once I get the fork tubes back I can do 95% of the mods to the Brat Tracker:
• Attach drag bar
• Install new black 2.5" speedo and tach gauges
• New headlight brackets (aluminum)
• New all-in-one switch
• New clutch and brake levers
• For brace
• weld custom seat hoop on
• install under seat pan for electronics
• install brand new carbs (these are hot)
• install K&N pods
• Install stainless 4-1 exhaust
• new anodized black aluminum foot pegs
• new mini blinkers
• vertical license plate holder

Man... the list goes on!
