Chinese ATV & pocket bikes

Well, here's a first, me posting in the bikes section...

I've never been a big fan of bikes but, some time ago, I acquired a couple of pocket bikes needing "some TLC". Last weekend I came across two other bikes the same at the right price which both had running engines (which was the problem with the original two) so, I've been putting together two bikes out of the four, the leftovers I will either keep for parts or scrap...

Also last weekend, a friend of my friends stepson (did you follow that?) gave me a 110cc chinese ATV as advanced payment for a polishing job (more on that a little later...). From what I can tell, everything is there but, some... er... amateur has made a rats nest of the wiring harness so, nothing works... plus there's no battery. I'm heading out soon to search for a new loom so , I'll update soon...

Patience my friend, I have a Honda G100 to go on the black chopper (when I get around to it)

Thankfully, Elstar Products is only a few minutes away from me so, with the old loom in hand I headed over there. After a short while, we found a suitable loom (I had to do a bit of plug rewiring on the ATV) & I walked away with the new loom, a combo switch & a new (but damaged) battery for $53 (because that's all the cash I had on me)

The only damage to the battery was the + terminal was a bit bent; no big deal, it still works & is currently charging...

i have a 110 quad just like that. its great fun rode it today. shouldnt be too hard to sort the wiring. you dont need most of it anyway

So, while I wait for the battery to charge, I thought I'd sort the rear brakes. The sight glass in the master was... erm.. gone &, being hydraulic, that's not good for it...

You may remember back when I was building my 2013 build-off winning kart D) I happened upon some used pit bike brake parts; as luck would have it, I still had a matching master

After disassembling, cleaning & reassembling it, it bled up nicely so, I swapped it over & started to bleed the rest of the system, starting at the union into the hose; there was some lovely coloured goo came out of there but, I got all the air out.

Then I tried pumping up the system sealed; no dice. removed the hose from the caliper & started pumping; you'll never guess what came out of the hose... WATER! Although water is a basic hydraulic fluid, it doesn't work well in this application :toetap05:

Once I had clean fluid at the end of the hose, I reconnected it to the caliper, cracked the bleed nipple &, within a few pumps I had clean fluid coming out. Locked off the nipple & we have brakes

Good thing about those chinese things is you can interchange the parts off of every model.

The problem is that some parts are not interchangable, which are usually the hardest to find...

Well, I got sick of waiting so, using one of the small batteries as a bridge, I hooked up my car battery to the quad in an attempt to start it. I now know the kill switches work because it wouldn't crank unless they were engaged but, alas, no spark...

The PO told me he had replaced the coil (although, I don't know why, if there's no spark, it's usually never the coil...

I'll head out tomorrow & get a new CDI & spark plug & see how it goes then...

One thing to check which I wouldn't have ever thought to check.

I also just had a no spark situation with my engine....turned out the spark plug boot had actually unscrewed from the cable, it's a coil off a 110 so should be the same as yours. Never know, might save some time/money haha

Allegedly, it's a new coil but, it won't hurt to check

I'll head out tomorrow & get a new CDI & spark plug & see how it goes then...

Gotta love the $5 replacement CDI's for these things

I went to get a new CDI but thought "let's ask the experts what they think". The response to the question "In your experience, what is the most common cause of a no spark situation?" was

"In around 40% of cases, the stator/magneto fails.
CDI failure account for around 15% & coil failure only around 5%"​

He then gave me a checklist to help diagnose the problem; #1 is brake/kill switches, #2 is a magneto test, which failed!

I started to remove the cover & quickly realised there was something amiss; the chain guard came off after removing only the top bolt, at which point I noticed a large crack in the stator cover. Moving on, I removed the cover & almost literally opened a can of worms...

Down in the lower rear corner of the housing, right next to the crack, is the magneto. After removing the stator plate from the housing, I think you can all figure out what I saw...

I then spoke to the PO who said "Oh, that probably happened when the chain broke & it got stuck up in the chainguard..." ...& you didn't think to mention that until now because..? :toetap05:

$50!

A new stator alone is $60 & I was looking at around $70 for the casings but, he found a used one sitting on a shelf that he gave me for $50 with the chainguard

Now all I have to do is change the plug over... AGAIN!

With a bit of luck & careful planning, I should have this bad boy running this afternoon (it's currently 1PM)
