Hi all, I'm new here and thought i would share my tractor my brother and I have been working on. It is a 1959 Montgomery Wards 8 horse lawn tractor (it still ran when we took the motor off). At first, we decided to mess around with the gearing to see if we could make it a little faster. Went and bought a 32 tooth sprocket to replace the transmission's original 8 tooth. The result was 16mph with the governor working and 20mph with it removed. After a few months, my brother dropped the clutch 1 too many times and ATE 1st gear. Literally 8 of the 12 teeth were sheared clean off.

We then had a useless tractor laying around with a destroyed 55 year old transmission. A few weeks later we were at my Dad's friend's house and he said he had an enduro laying around that he didn't need anymore.
This was no ordinary bike either. It was a 1978 Yamaha DT400B with a 2 stroke 400cc engine, one of the biggest 2 stroke bike motors i've ever seen. Now with a compression ratio of 6:1, a peak horsepower rating of 28hp, and top speed of 83mph, it's a little underpowered for it's size, but it is from the 70's
We began tearing down the old tractor and stripping it of its wiring, motor, and tranny. We then made a removable mounting system to hold this monstrous motor strongly and bolted it to the frame. Now I know what you're probably thinking, "Dirtbike motors have the drive sprocket on the left side and tractors on the right." Which is very true, we had to design a jackshaft setup to transfer the chain over to the correct side of the axle, using $80 worth of materials including: 2 pillow block bearings .75" ID, 14" .75" OD keyed jackshaft, 4 .75" 2 piece locking collars, 1 #40 12 tooth sprocket, 1 #50 16 tooth sprocket, and 10' of #50 chain (we recycled the #40 chain from the last sprocket swap), we completed the mechanical setup to transfer the engines energy to the rear axle. Now we are in the process of wiring all the enduro's electronics that are necessary to run the engine. For shifting I made a very simple setup. I took of the stock shifter off the engine and stood it straight up since it was on splines. from there I drilled a hole through the shifter arm and linked it to a shifting handle like a sequential shifter. Shifting pattern is: N, push forward 1st, pull back 2nd, pull 3rd, pull 4th, pull 5th. Here's some pics of the tractor with the motor:
