I just bought a Black Fox go cart for my kids. I believe it was made in 92. It has a comet series 20 clutch on it. My first question is 1) The spring is out of the driven clutch...when reinstalling the spring what do positions 1, 2 & 3 represent?; 2)the comet clutches were supposed to be symmetrical from my research it appears a previous owner has modified the clutches to an asymmetrical assembly...should I replace the clutches and go back to a symmetrical assembly or will the asymmetrical setup be okay? The cart has a manco 5959 belt on it. Thanks for the help!

Are you sure it's a 20 series? 30 series is more than likely what you have. 30 series are also asymmetrical. Many 30 series clutches say 20 on the driven pulley also. You can tell what you have by what way the cam sits. Post a pic and i would be happy to tell you what you have. When You reinstall the spring on the driven The three slots determine how easy the driven gear opens. What kind of terrain are you going to ride on?

I have to agree... w/ the questioning of are you sure its a 20?

... 20 series

... 30 series

The "20" stamped on the cam indicates that it is a 20 degree cam, not that it is a Series 20 torque converter. The 20 degree cam is used on both the 20 and 30 Series torque converters. One way to tell the two apart is to look at the angle of the pulleys. On the 20 Series, both pulley sheaves have the same angle. On the 30 series, the sheave toward the motor is nearly flat while the opposite sheave is angled.

...as far as the positioning of the spring... (from what Ive heard and will find out w/in a month from now)... Position 1 is for street- this position allows the driven to open at the lowest factory setting of rpm's, which allows the speed ratio to 'kick-in' sooner as the wheels turn. Position 2 is for on/slight off road- this position allows the driven to open at a higher rpm than setting 1, which allows slight/mid-grade torque(when needed) for those, 'through the yard' runs. Position 3 is for hilly/off road- this position keeps the driven closed at the highest factory setting of rpm's, which allows torque to over-ride speed, keeping the wheels w/ the highest allowed traction/torque.

You must pre-load the spring when installing it into the driven pulley. After placing the end of the spring in the desired hole and aligning the flat spots in the center of the cam with the flats on the post, just before pushing the cam all the way on to the post, turn the movable sheave clockwise -- tightening the spring -- bringing the buttons past the points of the cam and into the next valley. While holding tension on the spring, push the cam all the way on to the post and secure it with the snap ring. When you release the movable sheave the spring should rotate it counter-clockwise until the plastic buttons press against the cam. The insert buttons must not "float" between the cams.

Ok this is making more sense now. I am posting pics of the driver and driven but after what you guys said I am sure they are series 30. The 20 stamped on the driven threw me for a loop. They will be riding off road in a 10 acre yard/field, some hills and will have a passenger most of the time. So it sounds like 2 or 3 might be the better way to go? Should I go with 3 have the torque needed for two people?

Yeah, you have a 30 series. How many teeth on your sprockets and what size are your tires? I would start in slot two and try that first. There is a big difference in weight with 1 vs 2 people. If it was me i would gear it for two people and set the clutch of on two.

Thats a lot of torque. You will be fine on any setting. lots of power with that gear ratio and smaller tires.

10 acres?!?!... can I come play?! Oh wait... noone knows where your at cause your profile isnt filled out:lolgoku::thumbsup::backtotopic:

Id stay at a 2 n see how things go. The way youll be able to tell if you 'should' goto 3 is if you hear the motor getting alotta load as you go uphill. The way a TC is designed is the motor attains/retains a consistent 'load' at a certain RPM(thats why you may hear your motor stay constant... but you slow in speed. Thats the TC converting the speed to torque. If the majority of the land is flat(ish) definitly 2... if nothing but inclines... 3.
