OK, this is going to be a blog style thread similar to Kart Rods. It will be a behind the scenes look at the building of the go-karts and the filming of the series based on the book Go-Kart Alley.

It's been described as "the Goonies meets the Dukes of Hazzard on go-karts." But below you'll read a full background on the series. As the thread rolls on, I will periodically post pics and video of the karts and locations from the series. Also look for cameo appearances by several other members of the forum to swing by the Go-Kart Alley shop.

There’s a lot of work to do on 9 star karts plus extras, sets and set dressing, not to mention actor coaching, producing, directing, stunt rigging, stunt coordinating, special effects, etc. I'm setting aside my entire spring for it if I can keep from being interrupted. I’d like to start filming teaser episodes in April so y’all keep me motivated!

Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas!

Synopsis
Imagine being a kid growing up in the eighties, in a small town where nothing ever happens. You only get three channels on TV and sometimes when you’re lucky (and have enough tin foil on the rabbit ears) you pick up some fuzzy UHF station that airs reruns, B movies and poorly-censored exploitation films. And when Bullitt, the A-Team, the Dukes of Hazzard, Smokey and the Bandit, and all those shows go off and there’s nothing on, you and your buddies actually go outside. You make something out of nothing and spontaneously recreate your onscreen fantasies using the elements you have around you.

Your small mountain town becomes San Francisco and you, Steve McQueen, racing your green go-kart through the hilly streets chasing some bad kid on his black one. You go to the arcade in the next town where you find a kid just like you being bullied, and help him fight back. And when the bullies retaliate you find yourselves surrounded in the abandoned factory with nothing but your skills and a pile of junk to fight your way out.

When the new yuppie subdivision threatens to usurp a local farmer, you fight back with a go-kart chase through their golf course, with the Marshall in his souped-up golf cart (with the blinking blue light on top) in hot pursuit. And when a rich kid bets that you can’t deliver 40 cases of cane sugar soda from the local bottler down the abandoned rail trail to his birthday party at the state’s only amusement park well, you just have to accept the challenge. This, my friends, is Go-Kart Alley.

Twelve-year-old Jess McCormick and his little brother Brian live in Sumner, West Virginia; a small town where the factory has shut down, the railroad has been abandoned, and the good people are struggling. A new housing development offers hope and promises prosperity, but only takes advantage of cheap land while [sub]dividing the town. Sumner is fast becoming a bedroom community to “the city” whose new inhabitants threaten to change the very identity of the town…but not Jess and Brian’s!

Together with their friends they use their know-how, know-who, and know-where to make a stand. What started out as just a plan to forget their troubles and have “the most totally awesome summer ever” becomes a fight for their identity. On go-karts made from junkyard parts, they ride the abandoned railroad, defending Sumner and other small towns along the way from the interloping, “subdivite” oppressors.

The brothers operate Go-Kart Alley, a “kustom kart shop,” out of their backyard tool shed. There, along the old rail corridor, they build, repair, buy, sell and trade go-karts with all the local kids…but not the subdivites. Each episode begins with a hook that draws you in, to see how new adversity will find its way into the bustling shop, or the boys on a fun outing and how they will deal with always being outgunned. Each episode also finds the boys in a different plotline, with Jess riding a different go-kart that is subconsciously reminiscent of their on screen counterparts. A wrong is always righted, a good piece of advice always given by a respected elder, a lesson always learned; sometimes there’s an old fashioned fist fight, but there is always a build sequence, and ALWAYS a go-kart chase.

Character Bios
Jess McCormick: A good looking, strong twelve-year-old small town boy. He’s got a lot of the same personality traits as Benny from The Sandlot: a natural leader, dedicated, always willing to stick up for friends or strangers, and never given to what’s “popular.” But he has more the looks, mechanical skills and outgoing adventurousness of Cody from The Quest (aka Frog Dreaming, Henry Thomas, 1986.) The son of an upstart machine shop owner, he’s in good with all the old time pillars of the community, with access to tools, resources and wisdom the subdivites can’t package and sell in a mini mall.

Brian McCormick: Jess's not-so-annoying little brother and partner in Go-Kart Alley. Brian is very detail oriented. His skills at puzzles, Lego, and Erector Set building prove to make him Jess’s mechanic and the best small engine builder on the trail. A lot like Bobby from Radio Flyer (Joseph Mazzello, 1992) only a couple of years older and more mature, except when given to bouts of silliness after drinking too much soda pop.

John David Campbell: Jess's best friend; a husky kid and self-made businessman. His Grandpa taught him to garden and gave him an antique riding mower which he’s turned into a small town empire, employing several kids. He plays football because of his size but he’s not a jock. He’s the kind of friend you want to have around when you’re outnumbered characteristically like Woody from Footloose (John Laughlin, 1984) but looks more like Chet from The War (Adam Henderson, 1994) only, not quite so hick.

Shawn O'Hare: Shawn is a quick witted, wise cracking farm boy and friend to Jess, John David, and Brian. Shawn drives tractors, feeds hogs, works cattle, hauls hay and absolutely loves the Dukes of Hazzard, so much so that his go-kart strongly resembles the General Lee, yet he despises hick farmer stereotypes. He’s kind of like Mouth from The Goonies (Cory Feldman, 1985) only toned down a notch.

Josie Mayfield: Josie works at her uncle’s Frostop drive-in from the next town over. She’s the cute and hardworking girl-next-door. Being different from the girl’s in his town who are all infatuated with the new subdivite boys and obsessed with teen fashion, Josie eventually becomes Jess’s love interest. It’s not until after a few episodes of random summer acquaintances with different girls who are “customers” that he comes to realize Josie is more of a helpmeet than just a friend.

Thanks Doc, will do!

While I'd like to film an entire, bigger budget series on location in West Virginia (I have my reasons) for now the teasers will mostly be filmed in my neighborhood. Here is the shed that will serve as the Go-Kart Alley shop for now. The owner has granted me full permission to do anything want to the shed and lot. But I think it's pretty groovy as it sits. Comes complete with awesome small engine junk for set dressing. Shed needs some work though, even to be a set piece.

A used kart lot of sorts will appear on camera between the fence and the shed. This is where the kart built in this week's episode will appear for buy, sell, or trade in next. It's a big lot so I'm thinking also a test track. When GrandPan comes by this week, we'll get started on that:D

Check out the old vac tube. There's a whole different story to be written about the old guy who used to own this place. Apparently he was some electrical engineer who had his whole place automated by radio control from his house.

Ah, Dennis. I was wondering when you'd put this up.

Glad to see you're moving on this and I'm looking forward to it.

To those watching, I'm one person Dennis has enlisted. There's others but I'll let them chime in on their own.

I plan on being there at the end of Feb to help out for 4 days. In a back-channel conversation, I told him what I could offer and I asked for Daisy. (nice huh?) "Give me Daisy" I said. (meaning, I get to build the kart that is "Daisy Dukes" Jeep... and others, etc.)

When he replied, It was funny. He said "You can have Daisy"... I about..... Um... (Insert creative word here) myself. How many guys wanted to hear those words growing up?

I'll be working under Dennis' guidance and I'm going to simply help because I like the story. It's possible you'll see other things associated with me but that's up to Dennis.

It's exciting to me to be a involved in this. I hope it succeeds.

aww shucks!

Enough about me...let's hear about the karts! First up:

They call him the Bandit. Jess enters a drawing to win a go-kart sized 18 wheeler from the local grocery store. But when Zack, the rich yuppie kid ends up winning, he offers Jess a chance to win it back. If Jess can move 40 cases of Dublin Dr. Pepper to Zack’s birthday party at the Amusement Park…in 4 hours, the truck is his! Jess and Brian must work out a plan to make it through two counties of motor vehicle prohibited rail trail.

This kart is my daily driver. Once it’s done it will sport a gloss black paint job with gold pin striping, a flaming chicken on the floor pan and a full set of snowflake edition Manco wheels. Also a Manco seat restore with T/A patches on the hip pads, a CB between the hoop and of course an antenna. Gonna need a new front porch too.

The truck belongs to a truck driving school near Waco and I've been told I can use it but, it's apparently not done well in storage:(

And for those of you out of Texas who don't know. Sometime in the 80s Corporate Dr. Pepper switched to high fructose corn syrup. But the original, independently owned bottler from Dublin, TX stuck by their cane sugar. As a result, they were only able to sell it within a 44 mile radius of the plant. for years people "bootlegged" that super sweet stuff out of area. Sadly, Corporate DP shut them down in 2012 because of legal BS.

This is Rockford. At the tone there will be an awesome episode where Jess has to con his way into the snooty country club posing as a caddy hopeful. He’s being paid “twenty buck a day – plus expenses” by yuppie girl who’s not who she says she is. The brake band gets tampered with on his Denver Gold painted go-kart. His shop gets trashed. He eludes a “heavy” (bad guy) in a kart chase. He takes on a guy way bigger than him in a fist fight. And, he’s hit over the head, all to find out who’s really who and stop a bad situation form going down.

I originally had this kart pegged as Bandit, but since the 5 spoke Astros only come in 6”, I have to flip the front spindle springs to drop the front end and level it out as this Manco frame is set up for 5”/4” combo. It will indeed be Denver Gold with 5 spoke wheels and thin white walls. I also got a little plan to make the front porch look a little fiery bird.

The other I’m calling Fecal Green because the script calls for “a fecal green go-kart.” You know how Rockford is always being chased by some heavies in a big, fecal green 4 door sedan? This is it in go-kart form.

Lieutenant Frank Bullitt is on this case. When the nerdy kid who moved to town right before summer gets beat up and his black go-kart stolen, Jess and Brian build him a new green replacement. Jess decides to look for the culprit and the stolen go-kart. What he learns is that his friend rolled on the masterminds behind a grade changing scam back in the big city. He finds the go-kart taling him before he turns the tails on the culprit.

I originally wanted a Caretta kart for this roll because of their louvers. But, I’ll make due. Five spoke Astros all around with the spokes painted grey. Can’t decide if I’m gonna add some louvers to the side panel or center the engine and put some louvered flair from the seat to the back bumper. Probably center the engine because I seem to think I need to make a functional reverse out of my counter rotating shaft tiller engine. Because, Bullitt has to squeal the tires in reverse for at least one shot during the chase. Right?

For the heavy, a black go-kart was needed…I had a complete black go-kart. It doen’t hurt that it is owned by the lead singer of the band Slobberbone – best buds with the Drive by Truckers whose song Steve McQueen gave me the idea to turn the book into a series in the first place. The trick though, is going to be adding hubcaps that come off on cue, because everyone knows that Charger had 6 hubcaps. This one will have like 12!

When Josie over hears two yuppies celebrating at the Frostop how they plan to annex a farmer’s land and zone him out of business she rushes over to the Go-Kart Alley to raise some help. Jess and Brian have to cut through the golf course with the Marshall in “hot pursuit” to get grandfathering paperwork to the courthouse in time.

You all know the General. Meet Daisy! She’s got her heavy duty motor running so you can ride her all nigh…wait, this is a kid’s show! Standard Manco frame but the hoop has been modified. I was originally gonna put it back right but it sort of has a roll bar quality to it. I have little planned for this one other than white with gold wheels and a golden eagle on the floor. I’ll leave her to Kelly with her virtue intact.

And finally...

Zack. The rich yuppie kid’s, bought by his dad from Montgomery Wards, stock factory go-kart. All this one needs is a little touch up paint, wash and detail and it’s nearly show room. I’m thinking it’s later than mid-eighties…but who really knows that but us right?

The Orange Krate was my first go-kart as a kid. Bought it from a small engine shop operated out of a backyard shed in my hometown. Guy had a buy, sell and trade lot out front that full of mowers and tillers, a few mini-bikes and one used go-kart. I had to have it. Played a big role in the book but a lesser role in the series. Not sure if it will make a teaser episode but it is in the garage awaiting full restoration….in my spare time

In the words of Benjamin Buford Blue, "That...that's about it!" I'm going to bed so tomorrow I can actually work on go-karts instead of just moving them around!

Merry Christmas to all and to all an good night!

Let's tell it right- Snapple shut down Dublin. And that was why. Because they had the word Dublin in it. That, not the cane sugar, was the reason for the 44 mi. radius. But "Dublin Dr. Pepper" was ledgendary.

Very cool. What are you going to to with the cool (if not mechanically hazardous) "turbo boost" feature on your main ride? Will it resurface on a KITT lateer?

That's EXACTLY when it will come back...but on into season 3 when we intentionally jump WAY over the shark landing in the unbelievable by going into to the future on a stainless steel frame and taking on terminators. And yes, the nerdy kid who hacked the big city school's computer system in Bullitt plays a part in engineering these technologies.

... best homework assignment I've had in years.

Research, find the little nuances that make Dixie... Dixie. From what I can tell, there were two distinct jeep types used. One that had Dixie on the hood, and one that had renegade on the hood with Dixie on the door. Seeing that Dixie on the hood is seen more, that's the version I'm goin with.

Got the font, got the eagle graphic, sketched the flowers too.

Dennis? Do you want me to post more here about my thought process or should I just go all "stealth mode" and just keep it quiet... and just do it down there?

I need a cigarette.

Post away Kelly!

Did the first actual go-kart work in the garage today since the GGR. Had my first visitor too. He was excited at the possibilities he saw to say the least. Gonna be some magic happening around here day after tomorrow!
