So my dad, since he left high school and joined the navy, has always wanted a Honda VF500 back around 85 or so.
Me and my father have never really gotten along, personality conflicts mostly. but still to this date, will take a Honda VF500 in a heart beat, not while they are not my cup of tea in the style department. It would be really cool to find one that's not gonna turn into a money pit, and I can get up and running for him, almost to OEM, nothing fancy, but I would like to get it to almost brand new.
A few problems I've been running into are, the lack of honda VF500's in my area, and I've read a lot of the engines didn't last past 20,000 miles.
due to a few reasons. one being the engine running hot because of the oil system not being properly designed, causing blown bearings.
So, I'll have to open up my contacts list once I find one as a base to work off of, and find a way to either modify the oil pickup, to fling more oil to the cams, or some sort of pressurized oil system. It would be kind of crappy to fix up a bike for him, for it to last 5,000 miles and start giving him problems, so old engine, fixed up and given some modern enhancements.
Over all cosmetics might be hard, It's bad enough finding decent oem fairings from the 90's without paying an arm and an a leg for them.
But first comes first, Find a "decent" honda VF500!
