I've heard of Amish using electric tools, but run by a generator. Something about they can't be tied to the outside world. (power lines)

Back to the OT, I went to New Zealand this past summer and had to learn new names for lots of things.

Are you saying they have different names for sex, drugs and rock and roll? :lolgoku:

I have been gorging myself on menudo the past two days. It got me to thinking- what kinds of foods are basically exclusive to the country of origin (like haggis) and which ones are a little more common?

For those outside of America and Mexican food, menudo is a Mexican soup made with tripe, chilies, and hominy. The black culture also prepares tripe and calls the dish "chitlins" but I have never tried them.

Are these dishes found in your neck of the woods and what dishes do you think are specific to your locality?

IMO tripe is disgusting...but that's just me. You can get half sheep's heads here if you like. They are called Smiley's. Or you can get chicken feet and heads. They are called Walky talkys

I just threw up in my mouth a little.

I have three rules:

1)Feet aren't food.
2)I won't eat anything that can watch me eating it (Heads, eyes, etc)
3)I'm not going to digest something that digested something else (stomach, tripe, etc).

Never even seen a sheeps head without a sheep attached, but the best tamales are made from hogs heads and barbacoa from cows heads. I've made the tamales and like barbocoa. I make chicken foot soup loosely based on Southwestern chicken tortilla soup.

I eat all kinds of guts and stuff- liver, sweetbreads, heart, tongue, gizzards, pigs feet, ect....

I've also eaten just about anything that moves except insects and rats. (Wait- do mud bugs count as insects? ):lolgoku: Some of the more off-beat stuff: snake, turtle, nutria, beaver ....., calf and lamb fries, whole cleaned frogs, carp and gar, alligator, octopus and probably fairly localized-armidillo.

Some prepared stuff from all over- kimchee, head cheese, squid in ink, boudin, chorizo, pickled quail eggs, pan hausse ( I'm sure that is misspelled-maybe Sid knows),..ect.

Oh- and one more local: prickly pear cactus leaves, fruit (tunas), and jelly and candy made from the tunas.

Anybody besides me getting hungry yet?

You lost me after Ossobuco more or less...
squid ink I only have in pasta nera which I don't make very often, because it doesn't have any taste and just is expensive and rather hard to find;
I tried snake and alligator (or was it crocodile.. can't remember..) in an Australian restaurant we used to have in my neighborhod.
Oh and I bought ostrich once.. but somehow I managed to make a leather brick, so that wasn't really edible afterwards.
And that's basically it with 'exotic' meat.

I surely swallowed an insect riding the motorbike but that doesn't count, right ;)

Other than that, I'm with Chris here..
tried the good ol' Eisbein (bavarian style pork knuckle) but that's not going to be my favourite meal anytime soon :ack:

Oh except snails, I like them better than mussel..
lumache either in garlic or tomatoe...:D

Oh.. yes.. now I'm getting hungry again.

If it was Australian, it was croc, we don't have 'gators over here...

Here's a question for you 'sid; can you tell me the main difference between the two animals?

the MAIN difference? *shrugs*
I judge em by size head and teeth *shrugs*

An alligator looks like he's smiling if the mouth is closed, and you only see the upper teeth, a crocodile has a smaller snout a narrower head and you see both rows of teeth when the mouth is shut.
also alligators are larger than crocodiles or should I say "more massive" (americans huh ;))

But no.. main difference, I can't tell.

That's pretty much it, a croc has a long sharp snout where a gator has a round snout

Umm, no, although America has some large gators, I don't think they get up to 7 metres do they?

i live in florida we go out on the airboat and alligator hunting. Female alligators rarely exceed 10 feet in length, but males can grow much larger. The Florida state record for length is a 14 foot 3-1/2 inch male from Lake Washington in Brevard County. The Florida record for weight is a 1,043 pound (13 feet 10-1/2 inches long) male from Orange Lake in Alachua County.largest ever recorded was found in Louisiana and measured 5.84 m (19.2 ft).we do have crocodiles in florida.

South Florida is the only place in the world where you can find crocs and gators together in the wild.
