Just a clairification.... Sorry not to sound snobbish,:eek:

rocketkart- That is called a key, or a shaft key stock(a long piece to make custom cut piece). The key way is the milled slot in the shaft, that in which the key is fitted between the shaft and the driven component(s) to facilitate movement.

I remember this setup. I mentioned previously that I though it was a split axle setup; can you now confirm the axle setup? Does it have full length axles? If so, what art the sections beyond the centre that look like a collar?

Can you reference what it is you are referring to... i'm not clear.
The axles are on a differential, but after i put it all back together it does not spin independently anymore.. im assuming that i overtightened the casing... because it no longer spins freely..... dunno what i did, because all the gears were spinning nicely and i greased them up...

Let us know a little info on the air filter you got there, looks cool.

I got it from pepboys.. its just a generic filter, that i flipped upside down and drilled a hole so that i can screw it down.
I"ll snap a picture in a few.. i have to feed my daughter :D

I went to the hardware stores, homedepot, to the auto part stores, and the local lawnmower guy and no one has any keystock... grr..

i ordered this off of ebay..
http://www.ebay.com/itm/60-Pcs-KEYSTOCK-ASSORTMENT-KIT-/170699622094?pt=BI_Heavy_Equipment_Parts&hash=item27be7d86ce

and for the torx screw i'll take one off the other sprockets and take it with me to the nut & bolt store... they have to have one there...

isn't it's name "woodruff key" to be precise? ;)

just curious, was i supposed to use a torque wrench on the differential case?
as i noticed that after i tightened it all up, the shafts are now locked... and before i had fully tightened all the screws they were both rotating independently....

I think so,
but honestly I don't know to what specs SORRY...

So my advice would be,
contact www.hoffcocomet.com
(contact infos at facebook)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/HoffcoComet/161846273834675?sk=info

And ask for a service manual or at least the exact specs.
you differential is called SCD-1

Here's a thought: Back the bolts off a bit & see if it loosens up. It could be that, with fresh grease, it now has the resistence it should have.

Having said that, the casing may be a shim fit (as most diffs are) meaning you need a thin spacer of some description between the two case halves...

Was there a gasket between the two halfs

There should be
There's likely too much preload due to the missing gasket

Also what's sealing the pinion shaft
(The shaft that connects the little gears to the housing)

And where are those pinoins spinning

Are they fixed to the shaft that spins in housing
Or did the pinoins spin on the shaft that's fixed in the housing

also that little "saftey clip " is very important
It's called a sir clip
It's the only thing that stops your axle from sliding out

I'm going to make the assumption that it was tampered with before... so maybe that is why there is no gasket in there....

any idea where i can find a gasket or find out if there truly was one?

Now, the shaft is actually what puzzled me because it is not really affixed, so in theory it can spin out of the housing, it did not have any sir clips on it... i'm thinking i might need to take it all apart and possibly put some clips on it...

The ends seem as if they were designed to have clips on them....

Sid, in this picture that you posted do you know if the shaft has sir clips on the ends?

Looks like i'll have to disassemble it again....

As Oxy said, there are more than one type/ style of key that can be used; technically, a splined shaft is a very advanced form of a key type connection. I'd go digging thru my Machinists Handbook for more rock solid info, but it's about time I headed to bed (first full week on third shift at a new job, and I'm really not sure where I'm going or which end is up at the moment..... (Not because I'm bored, but because I'm flat out whupped).....

Hi,
only two cir clips (circular clips) are part of your SCD-1
according to the exploded view.
218239A_3.jpg
also no gasket;
it's sealed with a liquid sealant.
http://www.mfgsupply.com/gomini/gominiaxles/gominiaxlesdiff/218241a.html
use Bison Grease #1650 as lubricant (according to specs)

but at one point they changed the diff, I think the case and the center shaft, but I don't know for sure.

At that point the HP rating comes down from 20 to 14hp
and it has cir clips on the center shaft.
diff2.jpg
if you look closely on this exploded view, you see that there is a recess to take the cir clip inside the groove on the housing

my best guess:
if you have no recess insie the case to take the circlip, you diff has none on the center shaft.

But I don't know;
again, I'd contact Comet directly and ask for advice ;)

[EDIT]
the old one doesn't take a circlip on the center shaft,
there are small lips in the housing to keep the shaft in
you can clearly see it in this picture:

PS btw: the scd-1 photos are from a sand bug build log:

When I was younger I used to call them jesus clips, as in "Jesus, where did it go?" because they'd always go flying off somewhere when I was taking them off.
