Hi my name is Pete. I just bought a used Kart and need to get it running. I'm located in Nothern NJ. I look forward to being a member on the forum

Welcome to the forum Pete. I am sure you are going to learn a lot from the forum.

Do you know what type of kart you bought? Post some pics of it so that we can see what you have. Do you have a lot of work to do on it, or is it a runner?

Here is a thread on how to post pics

Isn't that obvious from the picture?
the sprocket comes with a sprocket protector that met more than just a few inches of pavement already ;)

that's not a major problem per se, since that's what the protector plates are made for, but in this case.. the wheel diameter is too low, on the pictures it looks like there is no clearance at all (it almost looks like the protector plate is LARGER than the wheel)

And you want the wheel to have perfect ground contact, you don't want to move the kart by scrubbing the protector plate on the ground ;)

The sprocket seems to be ideal for an engine like yours, so I'd get taller tires on the rear axle and that'd end up being a much better set up.

Guys I have slot of questions, please don't think I'm dumb, I'm just new to small engines. Should there be a kill switch? I have no clue how to begin to start this kart! I know how, but the fuel tank was empty, and there was no line. I put a new fuel line on and gassed her up. How do I get fuel going to the carb? Also when you insert the Allen key and begin to crank, will it take the drill with it when it starts?

:lolgoku: indeed, it'd make a huge difference.
although I'd still check that you have at the very least half an inch between your protector plate edge and the pavement (with driver!)

I'm not certain this works for 2 strokes; but I've used two methods to get the fuel line primed. First, if that Tilly has a fuel release, loosen it; then give your gas tank CPR until the line is primed. If there isn't such a thin on Tillitson carbs, have someone hold onto the line while it is off the carb and pinch it when the line is full.

Method two is much nicer on the lips; but don't know the kind of suction a two stroke creates. Simply put your hand over the carb's inlet and start turning the engine over. The suction from the intake stroke on a 4 stroke engine will pull the fuel into the carb after 5-6 pulls. You may want to check on this technique; I know those Tillies have a bunch of diaphragms in them; I wouldn't want you to acciedently rupture one of them.

That engine is a Yamaha KT100. They're usually started with a starter like this:

DO NOT USE A DRILL TO START IT! As you found out, once the engine kicks, it'll take the drill with it...

Those tyres are the tallest you'll get (11x 8/5) for those wheels (5" diameter x 8" wide). The only alternative is to drop the size of the sprocket & guard...

The carb has a built in fuel pump which runs off the engine, which doesn't help to prime it. The only way I know of is with a primer bulb. hang arouns a bit, someone should have a better idea than that...

I know that most of those starters use something called a Bendix to couple to the engine. Does the Bendix provide the racheting action to prevent the engine from outrunning the starter?

Btw, google diy starters. Apparently, you can buld one of those starters for around $50 using a starter off of a Subaru engine. Don't know any more details, as I don't need one.
