Brake options, need advice

I jsut got my kart up and running and now I really need to get the brakes working better.

the previous owner had the paddles that rub on the tires, but when he put bigger tires on it he ended up cutting one of the paddles off the the other side he bent to fit with the bigger tire. So Im left with a singe tire paddle, which barely does anything (especially on wet tires!!!!)

my options:
1- move the pedal bar mount and replace with a new bar with both paddles (so it rubs both tires)

-remove it completely and install one of these

both options will require about the same amount of work, just wondering if the drum will offer that much more stopping power?

ya you could go with that drum, but as to not knowing what it is going on, cant really say for sure. If it were me, Id spend the extra and get a disc brake setup they also sell there at NT, instead. But thats assuming you have a live axle.

no live axle

so its either double paddles for both tires, or a single drum...

I dont need extreme braking (my cart only does about 10mph) but the single paddle doesnt seem to do much of anything

Drums it is. Does you rims allow drums to be bolted to them? If not your back to scrub.
There could be some mechanical linkage added to increase the efficienty of the scrub pads if you can't add drums.

the only way to add the drum is if its on the drive wheel, which I dont like the idea of incase my kids hit the brake and gas
Plus the hubs dont have a standard bolt pattern (from my measurement they are 2.25 across, 3.1819 diag (4 bolt)
My best bet may be to keep the tires and tubes, and just buy new hubs that fit the fixed axle bolt. Then mount the brake drum to those...

can you explain those numbers?
the 15 is the diameter, is the first 6 the width or the rim size?
could I use something like this with my tires

That is somewhat standard (80mm)
IIRC shineray quads use drum brakes up front with 4x80mm bolts

the 15 is the diameter, is the first 6 the width or the rim size?

I'd say you don't ned new rims at all, as above, I'm pretty sure you will find matching drums for an 80mm bolt pattern

I'm sorry, how do you mean "stick out"?

The drum should be covered by your rim like this:

looks like that's an 8" rim, but the idea is the same, as long as you have enough room to fit the drum inside your rim, and are able to attach the cable there is no reason for the drum to "stick out".

ahhh, now I got it....
so i can just install this on the back free spinning tire then.
I just need to make sure the fixed axle bolt is long enough to go through the entire hub assembly
hope shipping from china is to much

now I just need to decide if this is the route I want to go, or spend the extra money now and change everything over to a more standard size bolt pattern for easier modding later on...

correct, for the other side you can get a sprocket with drumbrake build in (coomon for minibikes AFAIK) like this:

If you want to change your bolt pattern, make sure the wheelsize you intend to use (or rimsize to be precise) is available for that bolt pattern too,
I myself have a hard time finding hubs for the wheels I intended to use because of such odd bolt patterns..
Or rims that fits the bolt patterns available that aren't too wide for what I wanted .. different story
