Hi, I just bought a Manco 2 seater go cart with 5 hp engine. Starts right up, idles fine but when I step on the gas it sputters and will not go. I replaced the clutch and still same problem. It will go slow on a down hill but as soon as any load (uphill) is put on it the go cart stops, engine sputters. How can I get this running right?

First off we are going to have to figure out how the kart is geared. Give us the tooth count on the clutch as well as the count on the axle sprocket. What is the diameter of your tyres? It could be that you are geared too high.

If I remember correctly, manco karts should come standard with a torque converter. Yours might have been changed for a centrifugal clutch without any thought for gearing

Has it always run badly?

check out my post i recently had. http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=22073

I have a manco 607c. Cleaning the carb and torque converter made a world of a difference. I purchased the china knock off from ebay for $116 and the only problem i had with it was the supplied bolts were not the right size for the predator motor i have on mine.

If you have a predator motor, here is a great link for cleaning the carb.

if it idles fine then its unlikely the engine
if it is sputtering and underpowered then its not the clutch as it is locking just fine

has to be gearing or tyre size
do as landuse said and i reckon that will uncover the problem

I just bought the cart used from someone. The tire sizes are original as I have the parts list. Their was a centifrugal clutch on it and I replaced it with same clutch. The teeth on the clutch are 35 but I will have to count the gear on the wheel. I will know more later when I get home.

Ok, just got the owner's manual and parts list from my car. It came with a centrifugal clutch so I am ok there. The gearing is 35 x 12 on the clutch and 35 x 80 on the sprocket, which is what the parts list also shows. If I lift the cart, wheel spin is excellent, downhill is good and flat surface is a little slower, any load (uphill) and it stops. At full throttle the cart will not move and sputters and dies. could a dirty air filter and carb cause this?

If you definately have a 12T on the clutch, and a 80T on the axle, then you should be geared OK at 6.6:1. It should be good enough not to give you too many problems. If you could maybe take a pic or two of the drivetrain (sprockets and chain area) and post here, it could help us out a bit.

Something sounds a bit screwy here. It never does any harm to clean the carb, so I would definately do that just to rule it out.

On thing i learned in the past month, if you are doing any off road driving, a centrifugal clutch is not the answer. You will want a torque converter.

It's going to be all off road driving as we have about 2 miles of trails through the woods. I will clean the carb tonight and take some pics to post and will also check on the torque converter too. Are they hard to install?

My first thought was dirty carb; go ahead & clean it, it can't hurt...

Having said that, :iagree: there's a gearing issue, mainly because cent clutches are no good on hills, slight inclines, yes but, too steep & you're lost...

arent these karts pretty heavy? it might just be that the motor is not strong enough to push the kart.

Ok update on go cart. it is a 6 hp engine so it should have no problem. I cleaned the carb and it was very dirty. Looks like I need to find a new gasket for one of the areas at a piece fell off while I was cleaning it. Now the engine will start if I spray in carb cleaner but no gas is getting into the carb at all. Checked all the openings and hole and nothing is blocked so do I need a new carb or am I missing something.

Which peice fell off?

Take a picture of that part

U may have forgotten to clean the jet

It will look clean but it is restricted
Use a peice of tiny wire (pull a peice out of a wire brush)
to poke though the hole a few times then use cleaner to blow though

Otherwise u may have put something back wrong

no gas is getting into the carb at all.

That's a pretty wide scope; where does the fuel stop? Is the fuel getting to the fuel bowl? If not you need to find out why/where it stops...

Does the fuel:
-leave the tank
-flow thorugh the hose
-enter the fuel bowl

...or are we talking about a B&S, in which case, it's a whole other can of worms...
