Got what the owners manual stated 5/16-24 from home depot, but it didn't work. Took the motor with me and 5/16 fine thread fit.

...But, it's a chinese engine...

Now that's strange...

5/16"-24 means the size of the bolt is 5/16" and the -24 means there are 24 threads per inch on the bolt so making it a fine thread bolt.

On a normal 5/16" bolt there is 18 threads per inch making it a coarse thread.

Then either somebody at the Depot goofed (not altogether that hard to imagine) or the bolt was in the wrong bin (also not hard to imagine).

As far as the SAE/Metric thing goes- it's because the engine was optioned for the north american market. If you got a european engine, you'd have gotten a metric PTO shaft to go with your metric bolt size.

Hey, that's true; I should've known that :surrender:

I was thinking that may have been the case...

I also purchased a 212cc Predator engine to put on our Brute Cycle trike. When I put the clutch on the shaft and tried to thread the bolt in(also 5/16-24 from Lowes), it was first start to thread, then it got real hard. So I pulled it back out and left it for now. I didnt want to do any damage to the shaft. Could I have gotten the wrong bolt or is it hard to thread a new bolt in a new engine at first?

If it was a new engine, the shaft threads come pre-lubed so it should have been really easy to hand thread. Three possibilities if you had the right bolt were:
  • you had some gunk on the bolt that made it hard to hand thread
  • the bolt thread was knicked somewhere, which makes it a royal pain to hand thread
  • you cross threaded it (which is not very likely if you hand thread, only if you use an impact wrench or drill)

Get another bolt from a different source. Perhaps the bolt was an offshore product and not up to spec. Try a bolt from NAPA Auto Parts.
If that bolt has the same results get a tap and run it into the hole gently to remove burrs or trash.

I can confirm the Predator 212cc uses 5/16 - 24 for the crank shaft and the 4 block mounting holes, the Predator 346cc and 420cc use 3/8" - 24 for cranks and 5/16" - 24 for the block mounting holes

I counted the threads, it was an 18, not 24. Next time I'll look myself for the bolts.

No matter now, I took the engine back as it would not mount up to the frame. I'm having the old 7HP rebuilt.

Thanks to all for your help. :)
