No, I am not. I am referring to a deep cycle, that I can open and add fluid to.

The Optima battery that I linked is an SLA that is also a deep cycle.

There is a difference between a Lead Acid Battery, and a Sealed Lead Acid Battery. There is also a difference between a Cranking Battery, and a Deep Cycle Battery.

The reason that I did not suggest the Walmart Deep Cycle that I use for my boat, is that it is NOT sealed.

If you look at the TNC Scooters link I gave you, there is a section for Motors, controllers, and combo deals. For the performance you are looking at, the combos won't cut it. Pick your motor, and then the controller to match it.

Honestly, I don't know anything about electric projects except for extensive theorycrafting and web shopping. I just can't lay down that much cash for batteries when I can get two 6.5 hp from Harbor freight for $160.

Hmm that is true, how fast do the 6.5hp engines allow you to get up to? And I wasn't sure which motor or controller would work for my setup I'm wanting... It said like one was 100amps, 1000watts but I wasn't sure if that was enough?

electric is definitely going to be very expensive for the speeds you want. Sla's are the cheapest batteries that still yield good results. Keep in mind slas have a life of about 200 discharge and recharge cycles. Im pretty sure all slas are sealed, which means if you turn them upside down they wont leak.

Do you know basic electronics? Like parallel and series wiring?

You seem to know a good bit about SLA batteries... Which ones/how many do you think would be required for my goals...?

For the speed you want to achieve your cheapest option would be to use a golf cart motor. For batteries you could get away with using 6v golf cart batteries. In terms of controllers you would be looking at a Curtis or similar. Electric is definitely more work, but its quiet, and you get great acceleration.

I just converted my golf cart to 48 volt from 36. I used 6 8volt batteries. I can get about 40 miles out of a charge. Faster you go, less time they last. I went with 8v batteries because they have more Amp Hours than the 12 volt. As far as controllers, I used a 700 amp ge controller.

My plan is to use the old stuff from the golf cart on a go cart.
