Hey Folks - Quick intro; we are a father son team building our first offroader Kart from scratch. Project is a bonding and learning experience for my 12 yr old boy. Figured it was a good way to teach him to appreciate to work with his hands and gain some valuable fabrication skills most kids at this age are not exposed to. Currently building frame as a two seater and plan on starting with a live axle powered by 420CC Predator engine (claiming 14hp). Would prefer to run with a rear end differential and Ackerman steering geometry, but not really finding the parts. Looking forward to good advise.

Welcome to the forum to both of you! We are indeed a family-oriented forum, and we love the father-son (and now and then, mother-son) stuff. My older son is twelve and enjoys wrenching on his junk, and I encourage him to do all he can. This sort of thing is a far preferable to the kids being perpetually plugged into electronic devices- mechanically helpless and socially numb.

Glad to have you here, can't wait to see what you're cooking up!

Good for you, getting out there and making a mess with your son!!! :cheers2:

For a rear differential, you might look at golf carts - just be aware of their gearing, which tends to be deeper than most karts use.

Hey, welcome to the forum. I started out here as a father daughter team. She has now moved on to more girly things, but I have stuck it out. You won't be dissapointed with all the help you get.

Pardon? I thought this forum had a G rating... :innocent:

Some smaller lawn tractors also have differential gears with a sprocket attached. Although, you may need to extend the axles...
