I just bought a kart with a flathead briggs 5hp engine, and would like to do some cleanup/upgrade work to it. The guy I bought it from knew very little about it, as it was already modded when he bought it. I have a few questions:
#1- What would be involved with installing a pull start?
#2- Any Idea what might have been done to it based on the looks?
#3- Is it ok to paint the engine and tank, and if so, what type of paint will I need?
#4- I want to install a new air filter, but dont know what type/size I need...

Simple matter of finding an appropriate starter & attaching it & a starter clutch...

#2- Any Idea what might have been done to it based on the looks?

not without x-ray vision...

#3- Is it ok to paint the engine and tank, and if so, what type of paint will I need?

I would suggest sandblasting the tank first. It can be painted with standard enamel paint. The engine, on the other hand, will need a high temp enamel

#4- I want to install a new air filter, but dont know what type/size I need...

That depends on the adaptor; without more info, there's too many possibilities

Sorry Tony, but I have got to call you on this one :surrender:. The starter clutch is already there. All he needs to buy is the appropriate starter assembly (which holds the rope etc). You can see the starter clutch in the pic

You need something like THIS. I am not saying that this is the exact part that you need, but it will be similar. What you need to do is find all the make and model numbers on your engine, go to the Briggs site and find a parts manual for your engine. You will then be able to get the part number that you need.

Post all the engine numbers here and we can give you a hand.

For a pullstarter, find some small screws, line the holes on the pull starter up with the fly fly wheel case, put the screws through, and tighen them down, then put the case back on, hopefully that helped with the pullstarter issue!
