Front hub for 5 bolt 4.5 inch bc

Hi everyone,

i'm trying to build a two person kart and have some wheels for the front that have a 5 bolt pattern on a 4 1/2 inch bolt circle. Does anyone know where I can find hubs to fit this? I'd like bearings for a 3/4" axle but I suppose a 5/8" would be ok.

Bearings have to fit the axle its going on likewise with the hanger/holders it will also have fit.

I don't have any spindles yet. I'm building from scratch and I have wheels, steering wheel and lots of scrap steel tubing. I'll buy the spindles/axles based on what hubs I can find. I suppose I could make an adapter plate, but I'd rather not if I don't have to. This will be an off road kart, for bouncing through farm fields so they should be fairly sturdy.

5-on-4.5 is a common Ford and trailer pattern. If you were to use off-the shelf trailer hubs and spindles, you'd be golden- but they'd be heavy.

I think you're down to custom fabrication or at least altering something to make it happen. Not too often folks hang automotive wheels on 3/4" spindles.

On my bike, I was thinking about a 3/4" axle, (my bike uses a spare car tire for rear) it dawned upon me later that it wasnt going to handle the potential flex, I switched to 1" instead.

Surely they were on hubs on the original machine; do you have access to them?

These are rear wheels off of (2) JD rear engine mowers. They really didn't have much for hubs, just rectangular pieces of steel with 3 holes for bolts. They were attached to the drive axle, so no bearings for free-wheeling. I have rear wheels off a JD 185 hydro for the rear of my kart and they have a 1" hub with a std 1/4" keyway integrated into the rim, so those will be easy.

I thought about taking something like these and cutting the welds off and welding new discs on with the correct size and bolt pattern. Might be my best choice?

3 holes? But they are 5-bolt hubs?!?!?

If the flange is big enough, don't cut it off. Just drive out the studs, redrill to the right pattern, and drive the studs into the new holes. They are press-fit in place.

Yup, 3 bolts on a 5 bolt wheel. The "hub" was rectangular with the corners slightly rounded and two of the holes were too far apart to be bolted to the hub. The rectangle had two holes on one end and one on the other. Neat, eh?

That doesn't sound healthy or standard.

I'm with TS on this one; redrill the flanges or make yourself an adaptor plate

Thanks for you help. I think that's what I'll do, make an adapter plate if I can't re-drill on the existing plate.

I have a Wheel Horse with the same kinda of hubs. The hub holds the wheel with 3 bolts. The other 2 holes are for wheel weights.
