been browsing for quite awhile and finally decided i should sign up.
choose my user name from the unit my dad was in in ww II.
have been wanting a kart for sometime now just have not got one yet but plan to hopefully in the near future.

Welcome! Love the avatar and name, I'm an old "Cold War" Tanker myself. What unit was your Dad in?

I'm sure somebody somewhere has put a V-twin in a kart, but that'd be a heck of a project and I'm not sure of the payback...

I'd search CL for "kart", "cart", etc and surely something in your area will turn up. Also swapmeets, flea markets, yard sales, etc... they're out there!

my dad was in the 633rd tank destroyer back in wwII, he was a driver of the m18 hellcat

The M18 Hellcat is one of my favorite WW2 AFV's, probably the best (and fastest) TD we had back then. Made by Buick (I'm an old Buick fan as well). From what I've read, the WW2 Tank Destroyers had a heck of a time - because our doctrine back then called for "only" TD's to take on enemy tanks, instead of our later "Tank vs Tank" doctrine. My hat's off to your Dad - is he still with us or has he passed on?

How's the karting project coming along? Any ideas?

my dad passed away in 6/99. wish i had taken notes on the stuff he used to tell me. i remember he told me the m18 was fast.
my father in law was a waist gunner on b17. bomber crews used to just fly 25 missions, his crew did this then went on 2 weeks r&r then he said they did another 25.he is now 91 but his memory is still sharp and he remembers the missions he fly.

My grandpa and great uncle were tailgunners on bombers. My grandpa flew missions over Tokyo and the Pacicfic. The rumor is that his plan was the first to land on the newly captured saipan airstrip.

My great uncle was shot down over Belgium on a bombing run.

I've also got a Great-Uncle who was a tailgunner (B24), he also was shot down on a bombing run over Europe. Another Great-Uncle survived Bataan, the DeathMarch, and years of japanese camps. My Dad flew Huey slicks for 2 tours in VN, me and my brother were both M60 and M1 Tankers, his was one of the first units across the border/minefiend into Iraq with the 3rd AD during Desert Storm I. All I got to do was guard the Fulda Gap in case "them dam commies decide to invade Europe", lol.

BTW, after googling the 633 TD, I just now ordered "Yeide, Harry (2007). The tank killers: a history of America's World War II tank destroyer force." from Amazon.com, $14 shipped.

My grandpa on my dad's side was with Michigan Bell working on the DEW line in Northern Canada. He had a quick stint in the navy but I don't think he was involved in any conflicts.

Hmmm...well... I've observed that what I'll call "goal-oriented larceny" seems to be common among those serving in the military, and given Australia's penal-colony beginnings, there may still be a correlation...
