So as some of you may know I'm 16 and well I need a truck it's really not that great waiting for my parents to get home to drive anywhere or riding the bus home for school. Ive had my license for about 8 months now and still no truck this is mainly because I haven't found a job yet. I have seriously been applying from the day school ended last year but nobody has actually called me back. Recently I went to a few grocery stores, service shops, and parts stores unusually the parts stores seemed more willing to hire me but I'm not old enough to legally handle oil, batteries, and other stuff I guess its an OSHA thing but has anyone got any advice? It shouldn't be this difficult to get a job or am I just looking in the wrong places? I passed some Valvoline oil certification test my auto tech teacher gave me, and he's paying for my ASE Brakes test whenever the next test session is so it's not like I'm unqualified.

Thanks
Brandon

It's a tough market to be looking for a job right now. Just keep at it, someone will call you back. My first job (when I was your age) was working at a full service gas station. Unfortunately, there's not many of those around anymore. Don't be afraid to try fast food places either (or something similar). The job sucks, but it is a paycheck.

The age thing is definitely hurting you. My first job at 15 was through the City Parks Department summer job program, and they would only hire us on for 75% of minimum wage (they can do that when you're underage) at 20 hours a week. You have to have connections to get a full-time job when you're under 18, my stepdad was able to get me a spot at the same property management company he works for when I was 16-17.

I worked at a chicken hatchery/dairy farm when I was 16. Pay was decent and it was fun! Got any farms in your area?

have you possibly tried some fast food restaurants or coffee shops? they usually seem to be more willing to hire younger people. i have always been lucky and had job offers come to me.

try to start a small engine shop

at 16??
noone would take him seriously
which is the unfortunate thing

have u tried applying as a trade assistant
i dont know if u have those over there

its basically a person that does all the odd jobs the apprentcs and tradesmen dont have time to/dont want to do

sweep the floor, run across town to do a pick up, paint the sign and so on
its usually a full time job and it means u then have a contact to get an apprentaship or a reliable referance on your resume

thats how i started
went though a program at school and got a workplacement
that became an apprenaship

im 16 and couldnt find a job anywhere. but my family knew people at a furniture store. for the last couple weeks of summer i worked full time in the basement moving boxes, fixing chairs, painting dumpsters, odd jobs. i still work 3 hours per day after school and i make a lot more money than most 16 yyr olds... but thats because i had connections

some of my friends jobs are at a grocery store, pizza place, dunkin donuts, taco bell, and some have jobs within their family like helping their grandpa at his machine shop

you could always do side jobs to make some money, like fixing some neighbors lawn mowers, mowing lawns, leaf clean ups, yard clean ups, etc

my friend just got a car for $120, its a 2000 hundai nothing wrong with it 75,000 miles. some people were going to donate it and i think he made them that offer and they took it. crappy looking car...but it gets you place to place and you cant beat the price.

do you have anything saved up? i had some money saved up since i was born and got my truck off craigslist for $1,000. but now i have at least another 500 into it. when you get some money look EVERYWHERE and find the best deal.

maybe even get a truck from a junkyard with something like a blown headgasket? since youre mechanical you can fix it

Yeah i'll be patient thats what my employed friends have told me I honestly don't think i've eaten fast food for years but regardless I applyed at Mc Ds and Wendys as much as I would hate being around that "food" haha

Ive heard it's good to know people for a first job however not a lot of people are hiring right now I guess I might go ask if there is a program here, Thanks for the idea

I would love to work on a farm, there are a few here but i would have to look, I did apply at a farmers market but the owner said this is the season where they aren't hiring much

Yeah i've applyed at some fast food places no luck though. haha

www.snagajob.com

Its a great site to try.

Thats what i've been using to find jobs its just that a lot of the places that post ads end up not actually having positions available, or atleast thats whats happened in my experiance.

I was hoping I could do somthing like that at a service station or shop but well see if I get any feedback, lucky for me the manager at tire kingdom near my house is really good friends with my Auto Tech teacher and they need a Tire buster/ General maintenance tech

try to start a small engine shop

Well I have been repairing my landlords lawn equipment lately, right now im rebuilding a briggs flathead off his LT1000 mower because it threw a rod due to his poor maintenence haha but i make money every few weeks from small engine repair in my neighborhood. Its just not a real job

im 16 and couldnt find a job anywhere. but my family knew people at a furniture store. for the last couple weeks of summer i worked full time in the basement moving boxes, fixing chairs, painting dumpsters, odd jobs. i still work 3 hours per day after school and i make a lot more money than most 16 yyr olds... but thats because i had connections

Well considering my dads a manager of a sales team maybe he could find a small buisiness that would hire me? Ill just try and stick my foot in the door.

Well my parents said they wanted to buy me a truck however i'm still paying insurance and gas. I personally want what they call a POS because I want a project that I can mess around in, like you said about going to the junkyard and finding something worth fixing but my parents know nothing about cars in fact I had to teach my dad how to change brake pads but they aren't comfortable with me buying something that I have to fix for some reason haha

I really appreciate everyone who's commented thanks for the Ideas and maybe I can try my luck at some different approaches.

It sounds like you're just putting in an application and leaving it at that, expecting to get a call. It doesn't work that way. You need to turn in the application, ask to talk to the manager, introduce yourself, and then check back a few days later. Keep checking back. It's easy for them to forget all about you and go with the guy that's calling every other day.

Yeah I have done that at subway, toys r us, Outback, Cracker Barrel, and the bike shop around here but still nothing, but it would be ideal to go to every one that I apply for and maybe check back and be more persistent.
Thanks

Getting a job is a job in its self. Just remember the usual stuff: dress nicely, shake the people's hands, be polite.

If you've been doing well in the neighborhood fixing up lawnmowers it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to take out an ad in craigslist on these regards.

I will also note that in the beginning of spring rich people throw away lawnmowers by the hundreds per neighborhood, you'll just need to waste a week of your life to get a few dozen.

I may consider that the only thing that has held me back from putting an ad on craigslist is my age, I wouldn't think many people would be okay with me working on their stuff. And I know exactly what you mean I see mowers and trimmers and other stuff all the time at the beginning of the season even in my nieghborhood haha if I were to pick those up it would be a slow process because our jeep is the only thing we own big enough to haul anything(we don't own a trailer)

I have a resume written up normally if it's a job like the toys r us(bike assembler) or a shop I put mechanical skills but I've got another written for restaurants. Considering I just took the oil test thing I haven't gotten the actual certification in the mail yet and I haven't applied anywhere since I took it on Wednesday last week

I'll bet if you simply printed some flyers advertising small engine repairs and gave one to each house in your neighborhood, and the next one over, that you might find that you will have enough work to make some cash. On your flyer mention doing maintenance & repair (oil changes, cable repair, tire/wheel replacement, self propelled repairs, tune-ups, blade sharpening, etc;). This is what will get their attention. Also, if you work on chain-saws, edgers, weed eaters, snow-blowers, and/or other small equipment-mention it on the flyer. Post your cell phone number on the ad, and be sure you answer professionally with your business name, when people call.

Your comment about "a real job" cracks me up. Anything that pays you enough money to cover your bills, and be able to put a little away after the bills, IS a real job. Just think later you can put on your resume that at 16 years old you were already self employed!
