If the bit gets caught in the piece of metal you are drilling, it will most likely spin in the chuck. In rare cases though, you tightened the chuck up real good, and the actual drill press swings around.

Its more of a safety precaution than anything else.

I do agree that you should bolt your press to the bench, but this is not a reason why. To prevent this from happening you would bolt what you are working on the the press's table. Trying to hold on to what you are drilling into instead of clamping it while using a drill press is extremely hazardous.

After a while, I can finally present you guys a small update!
I went to the shop for bushings for my A-arms. 4 were in stock and the other 4 are in order. I'll get them Wednesday. Wednesday I can finally finish both arms.

I am now thinking about my rear design. I won't follow the plans there, as I stated in my topic.

I will follow Fabroman's plan more or less for my rear design. It's similar to this.

However, I'm thinking to adjust that plan a little bit. I would like to use the same pivot point and the same shock mount.
After all, I am planning to mount my engine onto that swingarm, rather than on the main frame as the plan says.

EDIT: Third picture, the shock mount has been welded by my friend... he's still learning a lot! Lol.

If I'm seeing the plan correctly, the rear shock mount is on the round tube that holds the axle; weren't you going to not use that idea?

Also, do you have a single shock that will be strong enough?

Wait, if you're mounting the engine on the swing arm, wouldn't the shock run through the middle of the engine?

I will use it, but adapted so I can mount my engine there.

Not yet. I might get the same shocks as the front and use 2 of them for the rear.

I'll design the rear competely by myself then.

I'm going to use a Honda GX270 with a reduction box and build in clutch. That's too wide to fit on the side. (That reduction box with clutch is in the way)

Arrgh, I'm sorry guys. I didn't mean to write "weld" but "cut". My friend cut that one shock mount. He's still in the learning process, so yeah... Anyhow, he's doing fine for his first time with zero experience.
I am welding all of this. Some welds aren't that good and will be re-welded sooner or later (once everything fits).
Expect a new update tonight!

New update! Yesterday we worked really hard and we got some work done
- both arms have been finished
- both shock mounts have been cut and welded
- welded on U-brackets for front wheels

Hopefully we'll get the steering done this weekend.
