I got a Carter go-kart from a friend recently and am having problems keeping it running. I took engine apart and cleaned and oiled all moving parts and cleaned carbon build ups. Cleaned entire carb (diaphragm style) and replaced diaphragm. Replaced spark plug and cleaned out fuel tank and lines and the thing starts just fine but dies when you press gas pedal. Ive adjusted air/fuel needle to all recommended specs and still does same thing. :mad2: Any help would rock. Thanks in advance.

I have. It seems when I put my hand over carb intake and take it off quickly, it runs good for a second or two. Speeds up then right back to dying. It has to be something simple.

I took whole carb apart, including pick up tube and used high pressure blow gun and made sure everything is working correctly. I dont believe anything is clogged up. What do y'all set the air/fuel mix needle at? It will idle as long as it has gas, just dies when I press the pedal.

I've had the same problem with a different engine, 50cc, 4 stroke. The engine idled fined and when you slowly open throttle, the engine will rev up nicely. However, when you open throttle in the normal way you should (not dead slow) the engine died out.
I adjusted the air screw and it ran fine again. Try adjusting that screw a bit more?

Otherwise, I could think of an air leak.

Wind the screw all the way in then back out 1 - 2 turns start it up & play around with it from there, adjust it until the engine sounds "right"

Are you running an air cleaner? Suck some crud through the carb? I doubt you have an air leak. What your doing when you put your hand over the carb your choking it. I'm not sure on small industrial engines but one the bigger 2 smokes putting your hand over the carb won't change the way it runs if you have an air leak. Either will jetting. These are 2 tell tale signs of an air leak.
Take your fuel filter off and spray carb cleaner through it backwards until it looks new. If there is still **** in it, replace it.
Make sure the paper filter material is also still in good shape.
Also try finding a service manual on it and adjust the carb to stock settings. That's always a good starting point. Probably just needs the carb cleaned.
