Restoring my first go kart for a metal shop project.

Hi, so for metal shop I have to work on some kind of metal and make a project out of it, I recently got a manco that had no motor and well you can tell it has been sitting for awhile, I will have questions along the way. My metal shop (in school, I am 16) has welders and grinders and all that good stuff I can use.

I'd suggest probably getting plans to build a go kart and go off that if you've never done it before.

Do they also have a lathe & a milling machine? If so, you could make just about everything (hubs, spindles, axle).

I'm not sure if you want to go for a shifter kart; there's a lot of bending involved but, if you do, contact anderkart or look around for the pic he posted of a frame with dimensions.

An older style racer or fun kart would be much simpler but just as much fun & a bit quicker to make

Well yeah but not sure what kind of plans I should be looking for. I am thinking a racing kart (like a small one low to the ground) but then just put like a 30cc motor on it. Now what I am just trying to get out of you guys on here is what size motor can I put on my go kart and the whole go kart being under 1,000 dollars. Then when you guys tell me for example 20-30cc I am then going to want to know about how fast that will go top speed.

Yeah, I think the only thing we don't have is a CNC machine.

Well I just don't want this looking like a pulled it ou of a junk yard where like the frame is a flat rectangle, I want this to look legit.

That's what I'd do. Start by cruising the net; do an image search for "go kart", you will get literally thousands of different images. Find one you like that will be relatively simple & go from there

I can buy the peices and weld stuff or buy just a frame. We do have some kind of pipe bender, I am not sure if there are different kinds for different metals.

I was thinking about an off road one to but then I almost live in the middle of no where, very few cars on the roads where I live, so I was thinking a racing type go kart to run on the road, I am sure a lot of you guys will tell me it is not safe, illegal, and some other reasons but I have NEVER seen a cop back on my roads and there is also atv's and dirt bike going by all the time. So that is why I was going to do a racing type go kart.

I also thought off road because I live on 8 acers and it does not get cut or farmed. So I guess with a manco kart I could have fun on the roads and also be able to make my own track in my feild? So you guys say something like this would be the best with using that 212cc motor?

I would go for something like the manco. The kart in the pic you posted should do you fine.

You will need to get a centrifugal clutch or a torque converter for the engine. First prize would be a torque converter, but the are expensive. Seeing that you have $1000, you should be able to afford one. I think they are in the region of $180. Second would be getting a centrifugal clutch and gearing your kart lower.

I like the look of the two on top, double seater would be cool, if I wanted to put suspension on the front like those two is it alot harder? (it does not look like there is suspension on the back of those two)
