If your engine sits in front too, I don't see a problem with front wheel drive. If the engine sits at the back, then I guess you'll have troubles with traction.

Performance wise that is a bad idea. A neat one though. I race fwd cars on the weekends, believe me it can be done, but with much headache when on dirt. The amount of under steer will be increased. And if the kart has a short wheelbase you'll get wicked throttle oversteer. Although it can't be any worse than most karts since they are all technically rear engine rear drive like a Porsche. Mid engine is the only to race.

I guess it would be a literal "Steer where you want to go and apply the gas". The handling would be interesting to say the least.

That thing has got to plow like a pig... Zero suspension all the way around and no way to absorb bump steer, weight transfer from front to back, and no way to resist throttle snap over. But I bet it takes off like crazy

Add the lack of a differential in the front... or rear for that matter. As I understand it, the above was a prototype/proof of concept, and as such, handling ain't too concerning.

It's really neat. If industrial engines made enough power to have wheel spin be a problem this would be the kart to have in a drag race

Ok so now i am wondering what happens with any ratio this thing has, moving from front of quad to rear of go kart means i will be basically reversing the direction of input.

Running a helical gearbox in reverse will not affect the ratio. Mechanically, it is a little weaker in reverse due to the angles that the pinion gear teeth engage the ring gear teeth. With the comparatively low torque of our applications, it'll be fine. Frankly, I can't even guarantee the gears are helical, given the original application. If the teeth are cut straight, there's no ill effects at all...
