i know there is plenty of questions on gear ratios and i have used the speed calculator but i would just like some different opinions from people with experience

My kart has a 12T clutch and currently on the axle is an 80T sprocket i have not run the kart yet as has been a restoration project. i am ordering parts soon and was wondering should i use a smaller sprocket?

my tires will be 13" OD and 3500rpm engine speed estimate
I was thinking 72T or maybe smaller like 67?

Just looking for a balance between top speed and take off

thanks :)

If it were me, I would leave the 80T alone. You will have a ratio of 6.6:1, which will be a good one for speed and torque. You also don't have huge tyres, s you will be fine. If you would like a bit more speed, you could go for the 72T sprocket. Me....I prefer a little more torque

Uhm, smaller tires = lower speed.

Go with the 72.

The problem you might encounter with a 72 is loss of torque. It might not be that fun to ride. I generally find that people never reach thir top speed anyway, so why gear for something fast. I would rather be pushed back in my seat when I push the throttle
