why would you put it on a single speed bike? most single speed bikes have a different size chain than the bikes with gears so you might have to swap other parts to make it work.

Not going to work unless:
-the rear end spacing is already set for gears (dedicated SS hubs are narrower)
-the frame has or can accept a derailleur hanger
-the frame has the proper cable guides for the derailleur
-as wolfie said, you change out the front chainwheel for a 3/32" unit, SS bikes use 1/8" chain. Then you either need to run a double or triple chainring and a front derailleur, or a chainguide if you want to stick with single front ring. The chain won't stay on without either of these.
Might help if you post a pic or model of the bike.
It's much easier to go from geared to SS than the other way around.

go for walks on garbage nights. you might find someone getting rid of a bike that needs almost nothing. i found my sister a bike that was practically brand new except that the rims needed to be trued which is not to hard.

can take a bit of time and patience to learn but this is the kind of the basics. if you have to lace and straighten a rim there is more to it.

Years ago when I was into the insane mountain biking, I used to mangle rims on a regular basis. For re-truing rims, I had an old front fork mounted to my work bench. I had a sharpie marker clamped to the fork near the brake surface of the rim. The marker was adjusted so that spinning the rim would cause the marker to indicate the "high spots". Tweak with spoke wrench, wipe off marker with alcohol, and repeat 'till perfect, adjusting the marker in closer every time. Once you get a feel for it, it goes pretty quickly.

when i mangle a rim it is never the same no matter how much you beat it with a hammer lol. i have road many km's with dented rims and no brakes. i usually just true the rims while they are still on the bike and use the brakes to judge what spokes need to be tightened or loosened. if you are cheap and have a broken wrench and a grinder with some cutting disks you could make your own spoke wrench. if you don't mind spending about $10 you could buy one.

i have also done it and it does work but i am not sure if they would work with a derailer. i ran one on a mountain bike once and i think it killed some bearings.

in my opinion it would be just as easy to find a bike that someone is throwing out that need nothing. i know i pick up a couple bikes last fall that required nothing other than air in the tires and they could be driven. i ended up selling them this spring for a profit. you keep your eyes open and it is amazing what you will find. i have removed enough good parts off bikes that where pretty much destroyed that i could build some unique bikes for nothing but my time. like this

and yes i got them front disk brakes for free. just picked up another parts bike with front brakes for free. just having difficulties finding one with rear disk brakes for parts.
