b&s keeps stoping

I have an older 5 hp briggs I can get it to star for five seconds but then it dies. I had it running yesterday and i went out today and when i pull the start it makes a chirping sound. If I rev it, it runs a little longer but I can't get it out of idle and when it shuts of the carb sometimes shoots out a little gas.

I going to check everything electrical first

I think that its my air fuel mix

I might clean the carb but I'm going to buy starter fluid first and try that I'll tell you how all this goes

sometimes my engine just needs to have the throttle open when I start it and I'll just let it run for a while

Dumping some gas down the carb will do the same thing. IDK if its true but i have heard of starting fluid shattering pistons!

Then you need to clean the carburetor. At least SeaFoam it. If you can, remove the carburetor, separate from tank, remove the springs, diaphrams, whatnot, and soak it in acetone.

acetone would help also because I just painted my cart and theres a little paint dust everywhere

took the carb off cleaned it out and dried it
changed the spark plug it works
cleaned the air filter
when I do get it started and push the choke back in it stalls

1 1/2 - 2 turns out. Then adjust from there. Should not hesitate, smoke, or stutter when accelerating.

Not with all the pulsa jets I have worked on. You also shouldn't smell gas, 1.5 tuns is rich on all the pulsa jets i have worked on, 2 would be so bad it probably wouldn't start hot.

I have it at 1.25 turns

how can you tell what screw is the air fuel mix needle

There are only 2 screws the one on the side that goes in the big nut this is FA mix, then there is one on the throttle butterfly plate, this is a idle stop (sets idle speed), try starting it with a buddy in the cart holding the throttle wide open.

I've done 2 turns out on a 3HP carburetor. No hesitation, and easy starting. Whatever rocks your boat.

try changing the gas
usally my engines if there running on realy old gas i will have to get it started about 4-5 times on starting fluid and then its usally worm enough to burn the crappy gas

No idea...

I've done 3-3.5 turns out on a Briggs carburetor before. I took a 3 horse carb and placed it on a 2HP. I had to turn the mixture screw out even more (1-2 times) just to make it idle and accelerate well. Weirdly enough, it doesn't smoke, and still starts up in one pull...

did you look at the diaphragm? i had some carb problem even after cleaning the carb, and even though the old diaphragm looked to be okay, it didnt run right until i put a new one in. they are like a buck and easy to find for the 5hp briggs. and as stated before, make sure you have fresh gas in there if you dont already.

Any hardware store can sell ya the diaphragm.
