More RPMs before lockup?

Is there a way to modify a comet clutch so that I can get increased engine RPM before the clutch locks up. Seems like the engine is lugging during take off.
Honda gx 160
6:1 gear ratio
16.5 rear tires
Single wheel drive.

You can buy different springs. They are thicker and heavyer gauge so it takes more centrifical force to engauge.

They sell clutches with differing engagement points, you could also get new springs that have a higher engagement.

I'll try to find a stronger spring. I also need to replace the bronze bushing. I'll try to locate the parts.

a really cool way to increase your clutch performance is you cnc lathe the inside were the clutch pads touch on the outer shell. what happens is the factory doesnt make them 100% perfect. the clutch pads are straight. this helps to break in your clutch and insure max grab

With 16.5" rear tires, an 8:1 gear ratio would help your situation more than any higher stall clutch.

My next change to this cart is to put a 72 or 80 tooth sprocket on it. I think that will give me the low end power that I want out of this cart.

Yep... look at the shoes on most any somewhat new clutch and you'll see that the shoes are only really worn near one edge.

Be careful cutting on the clutch bell though since there's not much material to start with
